Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics did not shoot well but still had little difficulty exacting revenge against the Chicago Bulls. Antoine Walker scored 22 points and Paul Pierce added 17 as Celtics cruised to a 91-69 rout of the Bulls. Boston shot just 37 percent (34-of-91), but Chicago was even worse at 30 percent (23-of-77) and never was in the game. The Bulls took both home meetings from the Celtics last season and rallied from a 13-point deficit a week ago in a 99-96 victory at Boston. Walker, a Chicago native, said revenge was not on his mind. "This was not a grudge game because they beat us last week," he said. "I'm more upset that we blew a 13-point lead and lost the game." Walker had 17 points in the first half as Boston took a 53-34 advantage into the locker room. It began the second half with a 9-0 run that stretched the lead to 62-34 with 10:11 remaining. Walker, who shot 5-of-23 and made just 1-of-10 3-pointers in the first meeting with the Bulls, was 7-of-18 from the field. "I'm still trying to find my stroke," Walker said. "Tonight I got a lot of great looks. It's frustrating not to hit all of those shots. I'm still in the process of working out the rough spots. Tonight I knew I had to be aggressive, I had to try to get to the basket and not just settle for some outside shots." "We played very unselfish and used to our advantage the fact that we had a number of players who could play well offensively," Pierce added. "That takes a lot of pressure off of me. Tonight Antoine led us in the charge, especially in the first half." Walker started slowly, hitting just 1-of-5 shots in the first quarter as Boston climbed ahead, 23-18. But the Celtics began the second quarter with an 20-11 run that expanded the lead to 43-29 as Pierce made a layup with 4:46 remaining. The Bulls got within 25-20 on a 21-foot jumper by Jamal Crawford 68 seconds into the period. But they missed seven of their next 10 shots, while Boston made eight of its next 13. Eric Williams, who had 12 points, began the burst with a layup and hit a 13-footer after Shammond Williams buried a 21-footer. Walter McCarty made a 3-pointer and Walker followed with a jumper on Boston's next possession to established a double-digit lead for the rest of the game. Williams added 11 points and McCarty and Tony Battie chipped in 10 apiece. Tyson Chandler paced the Bulls with 15 points, but Jalen Rose had 10 on 3-of-14 from the floor and rookie point guard Jay Williams was held to six points on 2-of-11 shooting. "We just did not get it done tonight," Rose said. "It started out OK, but in the second and third quarters, it got away from us and they really started taking it to us. They play good defense, but we just had a hard time scoring. We never scored more than 20 points in a quarter" "Our concentration was much better tonight, especially on the things we didn't do well in our first few games," Pierce said. "Tonight we rebounded well and also played good, aggressive defense. Our rebounding improved because we boxed out. Before, we were getting too many people inside and not being physical and not putting a body on them." The Bulls have lost three straight since opening the season with two wins.
