Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks are treating the lower tier of the NBA like a bunch of junior varsity squads. Dirk Nowitzki had 24 points and 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes as the Mavericks remained the league's only unbeaten team with a 114-87 rout of the Chicago Bulls. Dallas had cruised to victories over Memphis, Phoenix, Golden State and Toronto without Vince Carter and made short work of the inexperienced Bulls on Friday. The Mavericks finally get a shot at a team with a current winning record Saturday when they host defensive-minded Detroit. "This was a terrific game for us," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We've got another tough one tomorrow. However, for back-to-backs, you can't write a better script than having them play out this way." The Mavericks never trailed, quickly jumping to a 16-6 lead on a three-point play by Nowitzki nearly five minutes into the game. The German sensation scored 12 in the quarter as Dallas closed the period with a 9-0 run for a 34-20 bulge. Trenton Hassell's jumper pulled Chicago within 39-29 with just over nine minutes left before halftime. The Mavericks responded with nine straight points and opened a 48-29 cushion with 6:53 to go. "Tonight I thought Chicago was off," Nelson said. "We clicked and they didn't. It gives us the best start in franchise history and we're very proud of it." Dallas held a 62-42 halftime advantage, and Nowitzki's 3-pointer capped a 10-1 run to open the second half for a 72-43 bulge. A basket by Eduardo Najera with just under seven minutes left gave the Mavs their largest lead at 104-64. Najera scored 15 points and Chicago native Michael Finley added 14 as Dallas placed six players in double figures. Shawn Bradley had a huge night with eight points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks. "Chicago is a very young and very energetic team," Bradley said. "Tonight we knew it was a matter of playing hard and getting them down early." The Mavs have won nine straight meetings with the Bulls and posted their biggest victory in the series. Steve Nash finished with 12 points and six assists and Walt Williams had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds for Dallas, which shot 49 percent (40-of-81). The Mavs did plenty of damage at the line, where they sank 25-of-30. Nowitzki and company put on a clinic of team basketball in the first half with 14 assists on 21 baskets. Nowitzki and Williams each drained a pair of 3-pointers as Dallas made 6-of-13 in the first half. "No one runs like this team," Williams said. "We have a lot of offensive weapons to use. Nash penetrates, Nowitzki shoots from anywhere and Finley is a great outside shooter." Jalen Rose scored 24 points for Chicago, which was booed throughout the contest for its inept play. Second-year forward Tyson Chandler was in foul trouble early, and Chicago was an awful 42 percent (10-of-24) at the line. "To be honest, they (crowd) were disappointed," Rose said. "I'm pretty sure they weren't excited by the way we played. That's how it goes in the NBA." Rookie Jay Williams made 2-of-9 shots for seven points and Marcus Fizer was 1-of-8 for three. The Bulls committed 16 turnovers that led to 21 points for the Mavericks. The lone bright spot for Chicago besides Rose was the play of rookie Lonny Baxter, who had his first double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. But Baxter missed all four free throws. "This is a tough team once you get down," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "They spread you out and do a real good job. Once they got us down, we were impatient and could never catch them."
