Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The New Jersey native won the point guard battle with the MVP candidate of the New Jersey Nets. Rookie Jay Williams notched his first triple-double with 26 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists and outshined Jason Kidd as the Chicago Bulls snapped a four-game losing streak with a 100-93 victory over the Nets. Williams scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to help the Bulls stave off a late run by the previously lethargic Nets. Kidd also locked up his 47th career triple-double through three quarters, but it wasn't enough. "Lately, I told the guys it was hard, because I felt like I was trying to be a team orchestrator and it was taking away," Williams said. "I always thought pass first, get everyone involved first and I was not in my attack mode. A lot of the plays were there but I was not taking advantage of them." "I wasn't surprised tonight," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "I saw him enough times in college to see what he could do. I knew he could be a very great basketball player." The Nets rallied from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit and forged an 85-85 tie with 3:36 left on two free throws by Kidd. Rose sank two free throws to give Chicago the lead for good, and Donyell Marshall came up with a big block on Kenyon Martin and added a pair at the line. Rose capped the run with a 3-pointer for a 92-85 lead with 2:31 left to play. New Jersey cut the deficit to 95-91 on a pair of free throws by Kidd with 56 seconds remaining and elected not to foul. Williams made the Nets pay by running down the clock before he dropped in a long 3-pointer over Kidd with 34 seconds to go. "Every rookie goes through having to get acclimated in this league," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "He will have some great games and some not so great games. Our hope is just to tie them closer together as time goes on so he gets better and better." Martin led the Nets with 29 points and Kidd finished with 25, 12 assists and 11 rebounds. New Jersey swept all four meetings with Chicago last season, winning by an average of 19.5 points. "We came out kind of lackadaisical," Kidd said. "We need to come out with an urgency and to play with a high level each night. That's what good teams do." Williams usually splits time with Jamal Crawford, who was not with the team due to a family situation. Williams took full advantage by penetrating at will and carving up the Nets in a performance reminiscent of his collegiate career at Duke. "Jay had an opportunity to step up and play minutes tonight and he did well," Cartwright said. "It always helps to make shots." "I was just out there playing," Williams said. "I did not even realize (about the triple-double). If we don't win the game, it does not matter to me." Williams opened the fourth quarter with seven points in a 9-3 run as the Bulls grabbed a 79-67 advantage. Marshall's two foul shots made it 81-69 with just over eight minutes to go. New Jersey finally put together its best stretch with a 16-4 spurt to tie the game. Kidd did most of the damage with eight points and a pair of assists. Kerry Kittles netted 12 points but Richard Jefferson struggled to get going and managed just six on 2-of-7 shooting. Jefferson has scored a combined eight points in the two Nets' defeats. "It just seemed like they wanted it more," Martin said. "We just need to show more emotion. I don't know what our problem is now." Rose finished with 26 points and Marshall netted 14 and 15 rebounds off the bench. Chicago shot 43 percent (37-of-86) and nailed seven 3-pointers. "Definitely a great feeling," Marshall said. "Especially seeing Williams go against one one of the best point guards in the game and do what he did. It will give him a lot of confidence." "This is a wake-up call," Nets guard Lucious Harris said. "We thought our last game was, but now we have to wake up to this loss."
