Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks showed little respect for the Detroit Pistons' reputation as a defensive team. Michael Finley scored 25 points and Steve Nash added 17 and 10 assists as the Mavericks dominated from start to finish in a 114-75 rout of the Pistons. Detroit entered Saturday allowing a league-best 76.7 points per game. But Dallas was averaging a league-leading 108.6 points and remained the only unbeaten team in the NBA with its most convincing victory of the season. "I'm not surprised," Finley said. "We knew if we came out of the box playing the way we are capable of playing, building on the defensive philosophy that the coaching staff instilled in us in training camp, we knew it was possible. Nothing thus far has surprised me." The Pistons gave up 68 points in the first half and surrendered a season-high 114 just two days after giving up a season-low 63 in a victory at Denver. The Mavericks shot 52 percent (41-of-79) from the floor, including 8-of-17 from 3-point range, and made 24-of-28 free throws. They committed just four turnovers, tying the lowest total in franchise history and falling one shy of the NBA record shared by four teams. Dallas has led by at least 19 points in all six of its games and has won by an average of 18.5 points. The Mavs have won their last two contests by 66 points. "We are a really good team with lots of good players," Nash said. "The last two nights we're really trying to keep the pedal down and not let up on teams." "This could have been a tough game for us," Finley said. "Detroit is one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference, so we knew that it was going to be a tough task. Because of that, we took our game up a notch. Everybody was focused going into the game and the result was we got the win." Eduardo Najera scored 16 points off the bench and Shawn Bradley tied a season-high with 14 points for Dallas, which scored 42 points in the paint and outscored Dallas on the fast break, 23-5. "We got outworked, we got outplayed, literally in every facet of the game," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "The game was nowhere near as close as the score and I guess that there's not much more to say other than that." Nash scored nine points and Dirk Nowitzki had eight of his 11 in the first quarter as the Mavericks jumped out to a 37-20 lead and never looked back. They had their largest lead at 110-58 on a layup by Nick Van Exel with 5:36 remaining. Richard Hamilton scored 19 points and Clifford Robinson added 13 off the bench as Detroit had its three-game winning streak snapped. Corliss Williamson scored 11 points and Turkish rookie Mehmet Okur had 11 and eight rebounds for the Pistons, who shot 36 percent (26-of-73), including 2-of-20 from the arc. "I've got nothing to say about tonight," said Pistons forward Ben Wallace, who had five points and 11 rebounds. "We went home too early. That's all I've got to say." Detroit committed 15 turnovers and surpassed the lowest total in franchise history by just seven points.
