Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- One team was bound to get a win, but it still wasn't the Memphis Grizzlies. Rodney White scored 18 of his career-high 22 points in the second quarter as the Denver Nuggets posted an 84-73 victory over the winless Grizzlies in a matchup of struggling Midwest Division teams. Memphis fell to 0-7 and is one loss away from matching its franchise-worst start from last season. The Grizzlies committed 22 turnovers and shot just 33 percent (23-of-70) from the field as they were held to a season low in points. "I am very disappointed," embattled Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe said. "We played very selfish. We did not pass the ball. We were selfish on defense too. We are not talking, helping each other, we do not trust each other." Denver (2-4) notched its first home win under coach Jeff Bzdelik with a surprising effort by White, a 2001 first-round draft pick of Detroit who scored 56 points in his entire rookie season before being dealt. He made 8-of-13 shots in his big second quarter and helped the Nuggets to a 46-39 lead at halftime. "Rodney White gave us a great lift tonight and also defended well," Bzdelik said. "There is a great upside to Rodney." The Nuggets stretched it out in the second half and led by as much as 64-46 on a basket by Donnell Harvey with just under five minutes left in the third quarter. James Posey finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds and Juwan Howard added 13 and 11 for the Nuggets. Chris Whitney handed out eight assists and rookie Nene Hilario grabbed 12 rebounds. "It is easy to say that we are rebuilding, but they need to learn how to win," Bzdelik said. "I was most impressed by guys like Juwan Howard and James Posey, who did not have a great offensive game but still played hard and gave us a good game overall." Pau Gasol led Memphis with 21 points and rookie Drew Gooden added 19 and 12 rebounds for his first double-double. The Grizzlies were pounded on the boards, 56-41. "I do not know how to feel, I do not know how it feels to win," Gasol said. "They played harder than we did, not better, they just played harder. We did not get into our offense, we did not execute." Gooden pulled Memphis within 76-68 with a pair of free throws midway through the fourth quarter. White answered with a jumper and Howard made a pair of baskets to restore order for Denver. The Nuggets dominated play inside despite an active game by Grizzlies center Stromile Swift, who blocked six shots. Denver had a 46-20 edge in points in the paint, and Posey and Howard combined for 18 points. "You cannot let everything go down the tubes," said Posey, who made 2-of-13 shots. "You have to go to others to get them involved as well. I still had to rebound and defend. You have to be a value to the team when you are out there." Denver has won 10 straight home meetings against Memphis. The 23 baskets by Memphis was an all-time low by a Denver opponent.
