Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers got little support from their bench against the Miami Heat, but their starters did just fine. Elton Brand had 25 points and 20 rebounds and Andre Miller collected 22 points and eight assists as the Clippers went on a furious tear bridging the final two quarters and defeated the Heat, 101-82. Miami led, 65-57, after Anthony Carter made an 18-foot jumper with 3:45 to go in the third quarter. But the Clippers scored 24 of the game's next 25 points, opening an 81-66 advantage on a jump hook by Michael Olowokandi with nine minutes to play. "It was just an absolute collapse," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We were very aggressive (early). The key was to take the ball out of Brand and Olowokandi's hands - we did that for about 30 minutes. We just lost all of our aggressiveness and we slowed it down offensively." Stymied by the Clippers' 1-2-2 zone defense, the Heat got no closer than 10 points thereafter. "It really helps us," Brand said of the zone. "We could play man-to-man defense, but when we spread that zone out we have big, long players who like to contest shots. The last two to three games, the zone has turned around the game for us." "Our guys were very tentative (against the zone)," Riley said. "There were four or five times in a row where we just didn't pull the trigger. You have to finish layups and complete turnaround jumpers. You have to make whatever open shots you get. We had open shots against it." Olowokandi and Corey Maggette scored 19 points apiece and Eric Piatkowski added 13 for the Clippers, whose bench was outscored by the Heat's reserves, 30-3. The sole bench points for Los Angeles came on a 3-pointer by local product Keyon Dooling with 3:56 remaining. "Pat Riley is a very good coach and his team is going to play hard," Olowokandi said. "I had two points in the first half, but in the second half the guys did a better job of looking at me and I got in a rhythm." Clippers sixth man Quentin Richardson was placed on the injured list before the game with a bruised right knee. Rookies Rasual Butler and Caron Butler scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, and Eddie Jones also scored 14 for Miami, which fell to 1-3 on a five-game homestand. "We had a tough time with Caron Butler posting up," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "The Heat did a good job running man offense, so we decided to play zone defense and it worked out well. (With) such a high percentage of success, there was no reason for us to mix it up, so we stayed with the zone until the Heat figured it out." Los Angeles shot 49 percent (35-of-71) and limited Miami to 36 percent (29-of-81). In the second half, the Clippers connected on 56 percent of their attempts (20-of-36) and held the Heat under 30 percent (11-of-37). "We had a lot of looks," Caron Butler said, "(but) the ball didn't go in the basket."
