Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady wasn't going to lose to the Los Angeles Clippers twice in a week. McGrady scored 35 points and thoroughly dominated the game as the Orlando Magic rolled to a 101-80 victory over the Clippers in the opener of a six-game road trip. On Sunday, McGrady scored 32 points, but the Magic stumbled down the stretch and suffered a 120-117 home loss to the Clippers. Back at home, Los Angeles was looking for its first season sweep of Orlando since 1991-92 but didn't come close. McGrady had a lot to do with that, making 14-of-26 shots. The NBA's scoring leader attacked the basket in the third quarter, when the Magic extended a six-point halftime lead to 78-58. "Every time I play the game, someone after the game says I make it look easy," McGrady said. "That's just how I play. I don't know if I'm making it look easy. I'm real confident right now and the guys believe in me and I have to go out and show them why they put their belief in me. I'm the go-to guy on this team, the guy that makes things happen." By drawing double-teams, McGrady opened the floor for teammates like Pat Garrity, who made four 3-pointers in the third period and finished with 14 points. "Those were all plays off spacing," Garrity said. "Most of the shots were in transition where we got the rebound and I was just running out." "Tracy McGrady knows when to get people involved," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "He plays a team game." Grant Hill added 17 points and nine rebounds for Orlando, which snapped a two-game slide and improved to 3-1 on the road. The Magic do not return to Orlando until November 24. "We were a little upset because we had the game won (Sunday)," McGrady said. "That's a game we let slip away and not only to pay them back for the loss Sunday, but this is the first game of a long road trip. This was the most important game of our road trip. It gives us confidence going into our next game." Michael Olowokandi and Corey Maggette scored 16 points each for the Clippers, who shot less than 40 percent (29-of-73) and fell to 1-3 at home. "We didn't shoot well at all," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We just didn't make shots that we usually make. Last time we had 120 points and today we had 80. That was the difference." McGrady scored 10 points in the first quarter and nine more in the second, starting with a 3-pointer that gave Orlando the lead for good at 40-37 with 3:48 remaining. He added two free throws and two layups to build the lead to 49-43 at halftime. "Tracy McGrady got off to a great start," Gentry said. "He is a tremendous player. He made a lot of great shots." The Clippers were still within 57-49 after a jumper by Maggette with 8:04 left in the third quarter. McGrady immediately swung the momentum with a soaring one-handed dunk, then added a layup before Garrity drilled a 3-pointer for a 64-49 lead. McGrady sank a short jumper and Garrity made another 3-pointer, capping a 12-0 burst that made it 69-49 with 4:15 to go. "What really helped us tonight was that we were looking to share the ball," Garrity said. "We were getting shots after our third and fourth pass. When you're sharing the ball and everyone's touching it, it's easier to get a rhythm in your shot." Garrity's 3-pointer kept the lead at 20 points entering the final period, and the Clippers got no closer than 13 points thereafter. Jacque Vaughn had 10 points and six assists and 6-2 guard Darrell Armstrong swept 10 rebounds for the Magic, who shot 46 percent (41-of-90) and held a 52-33 advantage on the glass. Elton Brand had 10 points and 12 rebounds for his seventh straight double-double and added seven blocks for the Clippers, who surrendered 26 points on 19 turnovers.
