Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons proved they can beat the Utah Jazz, with or without Karl Malone. Nine days after handing them a two-point loss without Malone in the lineup, Richard Hamilton scored 25 points to lead the Pistons to a 86-75 victory over the Jazz and the future Hall of Famer. Hamilton connected on 9-of-15 shots from the field and scored seven points during a 21-2 run to end the third quarter that broke open the game. "We made them work a lot in the first half," said Hamilton, who scored 29 in the previous meeting. "They really ran out of gas in the third and fourth quarters. That's when we really put them away." Detroit's stifling defense, which ranks second in the NBA, took advantage of a team that played its fourth game in five nights and is in the midst of a five-game road trip. After trailing for most of the first half, Utah tied it at 50-50 on Matt Harpring's jumper with 7:33 left in the third quarter. But the Pistons answered quickly, scoring the next 11 points and taking a 71-52 lead into the final period. "At halftime, we said that we had to get back to playing solid and playing with more energy," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "That (run) was mostly our defense," Hamilton added. "We set up a lot of easy baskets by playing much tougher at the other end." Detroit's Chauncey Billups returned from a one-game suspension and scored 17 points while Clifford Robinson chipped in 14 off the bench. "They beat us and didn't even break a sweat," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "They had control of everything almost all night long." Malone, who missed the first meeting with Detroit due to a virus, did little to change Utah's fate, netting just 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting. Ben Wallace kept Malone in check and dominated the boards, outrebounding Utah's starting five, 15-13. "I tried to make him take tough shots every time and I was able to do that," Wallace said. "Even the ones he made, I had a hand in his face." Greg Ostertag paced the Jazz with 11 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Utah was held to 14 points in the first quarter and 15 in the third on its way to the lowest point total against the Pistons in franchise history. At 3-7 the Jazz are off to their worst starts since 1982-83. "You don't sit there and write the season off," said Malone, who is averaging just 13.7 points in the second of back-to-back games. "When you have success for a lot of years, people like to see you lose. But we have a lot of character." The Pistons have matched their unexpected start of last season at 7-2 and have won five of their last six, improving to 4-0 at home.
