Game StoryWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Larry Hughes is becoming a sparkplug for the Washington Wizards. Hughes scored scored all 14 of his points in the first half and Jerry Stackhouse had 16 points and tied a season high with 10 assists as the Wizards got off to a hot start and cruised to a 95-65 rout of the reeling Miami Heat. The Wizards signed Hughes as a free agent in July and the fifth-year guard is starting along with Stackhouse in the backcourt. He is not a top offensive option but is beginning to show that when he plays well, Washington wins. "I'm feeling good," he said. "The summer's paying off - all the work I did. I think that's where the learning comes in. Now it's paying off for me." Hughes scored eight points in the first six-plus minutes as the Wizards jumped out to an 11-2 lead. Michael Jordan scored six of his eight points in the first quarter as Washington carried a 28-14 advantage into the second period. "They came out and played a lot better than we did," Heat guard Eddie Jones said. "Early on we missed a lot of open looks and tried to fight back. We just couldn't fight back." Hughes made 5-of-8 shots and grabbed a season-high seven rebounds. He is averaging 14.1 points in his last six games and the Wizards have won five of those. Washington opened the second quarter with a 10-2 run led by Kwame Brown, who scored five points during the spurt and finished with 15 and 11 rebounds. The Wizards scored the final eight points of the first half capped by Hughes' jumper, which gave them a 59-32 halftime advantage. Bryon Russell scored 12 points for Washington, which shot 52 percent (35-of-67) from the floor and won for the third time in its last four games at the MCI Center. "Jerry had 10 assists tonight, we had the ball moving," Wizards coach Doug Collins said. "Kwame played with a lot of energy, so that was great to see. We had a lot of positive things tonight." Malik Allen scored 14 points and Mike James added 13 off the bench for Miami, which has lost five straight and seven of its first eight. The Heat shot just 33 percent (25-of-76), including 2-of-17 3-pointers, and committed 17 turnovers leading to 24 points for the Wizards. "It was an absolute total breakdown," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We couldn't make a shot for the first 8-10 minutes. Once the game got going that way, you lost all chance of coming back. We just got our (butt) kicked." Stackhouse buried four free throws as Washington ended the third quarter with 12 straight points and matched its largest lead at 81-51 heading into the final quarter.
