Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Armed with three 20-point scorers, the Atlanta Hawks instead won with defense. Theo Ratliff dominated the interior with a career-high 17 rebounds and five blocks as the Hawks shut down the New Orleans Hornets, 89-82, to remain perfect at home. The Hawks are the only NBA team with three 20-point scorers in Glenn Robinson, Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Jason Terry. They carried the offense again as they were the only Atlanta players in double figures and combined for 65 points. But Ratliff, who made the All-Star team and was the league leader in blocks per game two years ago, controlled the game with his work in the paint and led Atlanta's best defensive effort of the season. "Theo had a lot of blocked shots," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "He did a great job blocking and chasing shots. Seventeen boards, that was his best activity and results all year. He had a high impact on the game." "I feel like every time I step in there, I want to establish the middle," Ratliff ssaid. "They got a couple looks at me in the first quarter. I knew I had to buckle myself down and get myself ready." The 6-10 center matched his career high in rebounds, set November 3, 2000 at Orlando. He also had five of Atlanta's 11 blocks. Defensive-minded guard Ira Newble added three rejections. "The guys did an excellent job of making the hustle plays. They (Hornets) were focusing on me, and they (teammates) got blocks from behind." The Hornets, who boast six players on the All-Star ballot, did not break 80 points until garbage time. They were able to surpass their previous low of 79 at Chicago on November 1. Abdur-Rahim had 27 points and eight rebounds, Robinson added 24 and eight and Terry scored 14 points for Atlanta, which took the lead for good in the second quarter. Ratliff scored seven points. "Knowing Theo is there, you can play a little more aggressive," Terry said. "If you get beat, you know he's back there." "He did a great job for us," Robinson said. "He changed a lot of shots." Jamal Mashburn scored 19 points and David Wesley added 18 for New Orleans, which shot less than 35 percent (32-of-92) from the field and had a two-game winning streak snapped. All-Star guard Baron Davis made just 5-of-21 shots. "Fatigue played a factor," said Hornets coach Paul Silas, whose club was playing for the sixth time in nine nights. "When you're a little tired, you don't pressure enough." A 3-pointer by Terry gave the Hawks a 35-34 lead for good and triggered a 7-0 burst. Ratliff had a couple of blocks in that stretch, and two free throws by Abdur-Rahim made it 39-34 with 4:04 left in the first half. New Orleans made just 5-of-25 shots in the second quarter and trailed, 44-39, at halftime. Atlanta widened the advantage to 70-61 entering the final period. Ratliff and Newble had blocks before a jumper by Ratliff capped an 11-2 surge that gave the Hawks their largest lead at 76-61 with 8:53 left. The Hornets got no closer than the final margin. "I can prevent a lot of things and make people change a lot of shots," Ratliff said. Reserve Dion Glover scored nine points for Atlanta, which shot 43 percent (32-of-74) and held a 53-46 edge on the glass. P.J. Brown had 13 points and 14 rebounds and Davis had 12 and eight assists for New Orleans. "Our field-goal percentage was horrible," Brown said. "We shot a lot of jumpers."
