Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Seattle SuperSonics could not make a shot but still could not be beat. Gary Payton and Desmond Mason had big fourth quarters and the SuperSonics tightened their defense after their shooting deserted them, rallying for an 84-78 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Seattle (8-2) has won four in a row for the second time this season and is the surprise early leader of the powerful Pacific Division. The SuperSonics have been doing it primarily with shooting, sitting third in the NBA in field-goal percentage and atop the league in 3-point percentage. The Sonics struggled from the field against the Clippers. They made just 14-of-41 shots in the first half, falling into a 43-33 halftime hole, and trailed by as many as 15 points late in the third quarter. "We knew we were shooting bad," Payton said. "All we had to do was pick up the defense a little bit, make a couple of shots, and that's what happened in the fourth quarter." "The game wasn't really flowing," Mason said. "It's just one of those nights. Sometimes they're ugly and you have to find a way to win 'em." Payton and Mason turned it on at both ends in the final period. Each scored 10 points and played a key role on defense to lead a stirring comeback, and Rashard Lewis sealed the win with two big baskets in the final minute. In the fourth quarter, Seattle limited Los Angeles to 14 points on 4-of-24 shooting. Overall, the Clippers shot under 37 percent (30-of-82). Payton had 22 points and 10 assists, Mason scored 18 points off the bench and Lewis had 16 and 10 rebounds for Seattle, which shot less than 39 percent (31-of-80) but committed just eight turnovers. "When we're shooting the ball well and we're defending, we're tough to beat," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "When we're struggling from the perimeter, our defense has been pretty solid. Normally we can stay close until something falls for us." "We don't say a thing, we don't get down on each other," Payton said. "We don't play that way. We play to win. We just kept playing hard." Elton Brand had his ninth straight double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds and Eric Piatkowski scored 17 points for the Clippers, who have lost 40 of their last 45 meetings with the Sonics, including the last four. Payton shut down Andre Miller, who made just 4-of-19 shots and scored 12 points. A jumper by Sean Rooks opened the final period and gave LA a 66-54 lead, but the Clippers missed their next 13 shots. Mason scored six points and Payton five in an 11-0 run that pulled the Sonics within a point. "When we got down by 10, I told the guys even if the shots aren't falling, we can stay close by doing the other things like getting some offensive rebounds, getting some steals and taking charges," Payton said. Brand made a free throw, but Seattle took the lead for good on Vladimir Radmanovic's 3-pointer. Mason added a three-point play for a 71-67 lead with 4:42 remaining. "There is not much you can do when the ball doesn't go in," Brand said. "It's disheartening when we let them come back." A follow shot by Brand cut the deficit to 72-71 with 3:15 left, and the Clippers had a chance to take the lead on the next possession. But Mason made a flying block of Corey Maggette's driving layup, and Payton drilled a 3-pointer at the other end for a 75-71 lead with 2:12 to go. Two free throws by Miller, who was just 3-of-7 from the line, cut the deficit to 77-75 with 1:13 to play. Lewis made a runner in the lane, and after Miller hit a 3-pointer, answered with a baseline jumper over Brand for an 81-78 lead with 29 seconds to go. "In the last few minutes we were able to take our time, executed and were able to take the lead," Lewis said. Miller missed a 3-pointer and Peja Drobnjak sank two clinching free throws. Radmanovic scored 10 points for Seattle, which was battered on the boards, 57-40. Maggette scored 12 points and Michael Olowokandi swept 13 rebounds for the Clippers, who committed 19 turnovers. "I know we're a good team and eventually we're going to click," Maggette said. "Right now, we're not clicking." The Clippers were clicking in the first three quarters. A tip-in by Brand gave them their largest lead at 64-49 with 1:12 left in the third period. But Mason made a jumper and Ansu Sesay had a three-point play to get the Sonics within 10 points.
