Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Hedo Turkoglu scored eight points in a four-minute span of the fourth quarter and Bobby Jackson and Chris Webber chipped in 19 points apiece as the Sacramento Kings posted a 93-89 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Turkoglu had just three points through three quarters but came on in the final period after All-Star forward Peja Stojakovic missed a couple of shots. Turkoglu gave coach Rick Adelman more than he could have expected. The Clippers led, 70-67, when Turkoglu drained a 17-footer to ignite a 14-5 run. Turkoglu had baskets just over a minute apart midway through the quarter, including a follow shot off the second of two missed free throws by Webber. "He got it going in the fourth quarter," Adelman said. "He made the right plays and maintained good composure." "It's what I have to do when I come off the bench," Turkoglu said. "I've been struggling the last few games, so this was good for my confidence. It feels good. I'm happy to get my confidence back." Corey Maggette scored a career-high 30 points and Elton Brand added 21 and 10 rebounds for his 11th straight double-double for Los Angeles. "Elton is a great player," Webber said. "He has taken rebounding to another level. He is very unselfish." The Clippers (4-8) have dropped three straight at home and are just 1-5 at the Staples Center this season. "I'm disappointed because for the most part we played well enough to win," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "The effort was great. I still think we have a good team and I still think we're going to win a lot of games." "We have been playing well, but we just can't seem to close out games," Brand added. "We make too many excuses, we can't talk about any more moral victories, we just got to win." A 3-pointer by Doug Christie extended Sacramento's lead to 87-80 with 3:15 to go. Brand sank a pair of jumpers around a basket by Webber to get Los Angeles within 89-84 with 75 seconds left. Maggette and Bobby Jackson each made a pair of free throws and the Clippers got within 91-89 when Brand found Maggette for a 3-pointer with 21 seconds to go. But Stojakovic sank two free throws with 15 seconds left and Los Angeles missed a series of short shots as the clock ran down. Maggette felt Turkoglu's play down the stretch was the difference. "He came in and hit some big shots with a hand in his face," Maggette said. "Now he's not 6-7 anymore, he's 6-10 and tough to guard." Sacramento bolted to a 19-9 lead 7 1/2 minutes into the contest, but Brand got hot late in the opening quarter and lifted Los Angeles within 27-21. He totaled 13 points in the period. The Kings held a 38-29 edge midway through the second quarter when Los Angeles' Keyon Dooling buried a 3-pointer to ignite an 11-1 run. Dooling scored seven of his nine points during the spurt. The Clippers led 46-44 at halftime and Maggette opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer and layup. Sacramento battled back but trailed 68-63 heading into the final period. The Kings held a 53-42 rebounding edge but made just 5-of-19 3-pointers. Los Angeles committed 11 of its 16 turnovers in the second half.
