Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- For a team that can't score, the Denver Nuggets found a way to get a basket when they needed it most. James Posey buried a wide-open jumper from just inside the 3-point line as time expired as the Nuggets rallied for a 72-70 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Denver is the lowest scoring team in the NBA and was held below 80 points for the sixth straight game, extending their own dubious record. But the Nuggets used a rare offensive explosion to rally from a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit and stun the Clippers. Denver used a 20-2 run and took a 70-68 lead when Donnell Harvey followed in Kenny Satterfield's airball with 14 seconds left. Los Angeles inbounded to Michael Olowokandi, who buried a hook shot to tie it with 11 seconds to go. After Satterfield nearly committed a turnover, the Nuggets inbounded the ball from underneath the basket with 1.6 seconds left. Juwan Howard set a high screen on Los Angeles guard Marko Jaric to free Posey, who curled around the top of the circle, darted down the left side, took the inbounds pass from Harvey and buried a wide-open 18-footer for the win. "It was one of our short-clock plays and we were just able to execute," Posey said. "I was able to make the shot. It felt good. I got a good look and I think that was the best shot I took all night." Posey finished with 16 points on 6-of-19 shooting and Howard scored 18 points for the Nuggets, who snapped a five-game losing streak. "I feel real good for them, they played hard tonight," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "Despite missing layups, shots and rebounds, we still hung in there." Los Angeles was held to just eight points in the fourth quarter - just two better than the NBA record - and managed just four in the final 9:45. "We haven't had a fourth-quarter meltdown quite like that one," Clippers guard Eric Piatkowski said. "We got a 16-point lead and we just didn't hold it. Regardless of who is in the game, if you're up 16 in the fourth quarter, you don't lose that lead." The Clippers had a 66-50 cushion after Andre Miller, who scored 25 points, made a runner with 9:39 remaining. But they were held scoreless by the defensive-minded Nuggets until Miller sank a turnaround with 3:48 to go. During the drought, Harvey and rookie Nene Hilario scored four points apiece during a 14-0 run for Denver. Miller's jumper gave the Clippers a 68-64 lead, but he failed to complete the three-point play. Howard responded with a fadeaway at the 3:24 mark and buried a banker with 45 seconds left for a 68-68 tie. Satterfield was forced into a bad shot on Denver's next possession and he fired a 3-pointer despite being heavily guarded. His shot fell short, but Harvey caught the ball in mid-air and guided it into the basket give Denver its first lead since the second quarter. "Everybody made big plays, especially Harvey," Posey said. "We rode his coattails. He got some big buckets, some rebounds, and a big tip-in. If we keep putting forth the effort, we are going to get the wins." "Donnell Harvey is a special player," Bzdelik said. "He is such a situational player for us and sometimes I have a tough time figuring out where I am going to play him. He did a really good job for us tonight." Olowokandi finished with 12 points and Elton Brand was held to 11 for the Clippers, who were held to their lowest point total of the season and lost for the fifth time in six games.
