Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- On the same night Shaquille O'Neal made his return, the offense of the Chicago Bulls disappeared. O'Neal had 17 points and seven rebounds in his season debut and the Los Angeles Lakers held the Bulls scoreless for 6 1/2 minutes in the fourth quarter en route to an 86-73 victory. "It felt pretty good to be back," O'Neal said. "I was kind of rusty. I think we all have to get used to playing with each other again." Having missed all of training camp, the exhibition season and the first 12 games while recovering from toe surgery, O'Neal was activated from the injured list prior to the game. The 7-2, 350-pound superstar did not start but came off the bench with 5:43 left in the first quarter to a standing ovation. "Coach has his own method of my minutes that are going to be played," O'Neal said. "I told him I didn't mind coming off the bench and I knew I could possibly finish the game." "We just want to see how he recovers tomorrow; that's always the way it is," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "Then try to move it up to 26 minutes if possible, and then to the 30s and we can stop watching the clock." O'Neal played in stretches of roughly six minutes totaling 21 minutes. He made 8-of-13 shots, including a one-hand slam off an alley-oop pass in the middle of Los Angeles' fourth-quarter surge. "I always expect to do well," O'Neal said. "I missed a couple of shots I don't usually miss and I'm playing with 10 toes again. So I've just got to get used to being out there." "You can see he is anxious and energetic and has a way to go before his conditioning is where we want it to be," Jackson said. "I think we got exactly what we wanted from him tonight - some points, some minutes and a win." The three-time defending NBA champions have struggled mightily without O'Neal, losing nine of 12 games to fall into last place in the powerful Pacific Division. His return did not make them look like world beaters, but that wasn't necessary against the Bulls, whose rally stalled in the final period. "I'm happy for the win, but I don't think it's a win we should be proud of," O'Neal said. "We should always beat this team. We should beat them by 20 or 30. But it felt good to be out there with the guys. We just have to try and get back on track." Kobe Bryant had 21 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Derek Fisher scored 16 points for the Lakers, who shot just 41.5 percent (34-of-82) and committed 23 turnovers. Nevertheless, Los Angeles snapped a three-game slide. Rick Fox scored just eight points but limited Bulls leading scorer Jalen Rose to six on 2-of-16 shooting. Rose, who came in averaging 22 points per game, took a flagrant foul on Fox in the fourth quarter. "Definitely not one of the best games of my career," Rose said. "Just one of those days where I didn't get it done." Donyell Marshall had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Bulls, who shot less than 35 percent (31-of-89), committed 22 turnovers and have lost five of their last six games. Chicago swept Los Angeles last season. A steal and driving layup by Bryant gave the Lakers the lead for good at 48-46 with 8:38 left in the third quarter. The Bulls still were within 57-54 when Fisher made a 3-pointer to trigger a 12-4 surge. Bryant's fast-break dunk and 3-pointer capped it at 69-58 entering the final period. A 7-0 spurt by the Bulls to open the fourth quarter cut the deficit to 69-65 with 9:41 to go, but Robert Horry put in a layup to start the clinching run. O'Neal slammed home a lob to make it 75-65, then made a lane jumper before a reverse layup by Fox made it 80-65 with 4 1/2 minutes to play. A tip-in by Tyson Chandler finally ended Chicago's drought at the 3:03 mark. "I'm glad he got a dunk out of his system and was able to 'gorilla walk' it down (the court)," Bryant said. "I like to see that; it's a good sight." Slava Medvedenko scored 12 points for the Lakers. Chandler scored 12 points and rookie Jay Williams added 10 for the Bulls.
