Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The New Orleans Hornets like their new home almost as much as they like playing the New York Knicks in overtime. Jamal Mashburn had a steal and dunk to cap a key spurt as the Hornets won their second overtime game against the Knicks this month, a 105-97 victory that set a franchise record for home wins to start the season. Mashburn finished with 25 points on 8-of-20 shooting and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line while P.J. Brown scored a season-high 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. "They are a tough team, they play us very well and we know them very well," Brown said. "I think every game is going to be like that." "The nature of this club is to come back and make a run at it," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We were searching all night for a combination that would work." Jamaal Magloire contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds. New York led by as many as 15 points in the first half, sparked by Allan Houston's 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting. His hot start turned cold quickly as he was held scoreless in the second half and overtime. After returning from the bench with foul trouble in the second half, he missed all five shots, including a jumper with 1:35 left in overtime that would have drawn the Knicks within 99-98. He also made a bad cross-court pass that Mashburn capitalized on in overtime. "When I sat out I was cold and my rhythm was gone, I let it frustrate me," Houston said. "I can't shy away from it. I need to do a better job. Teams make adjustments and you have to also." "I just had better pressure," said David Wesley who turned up the defense on Houston in the third quarter. "I never really got into a good defensive rhythm in the first half. Then I just let it all hang out." Wesley scored 13 points inclduing a free throw on a clear path foul after a steal and 20-foot jumper with 9:07 remaining in the fourth quarter in the next trip down the court that gave New Orleans their first lead since the early minutes, 80-77. Dating to last season, the Knicks have lost 20 games in which they have blown double-digit leads. They defeated Detroit on Monday, 94-91, after nearly blowing a 32-point lead. Knicks center Kurt Thomas sent the game to overtime on a follow shot off a miss by Latrell Sprewell with 17 seconds left in regulation. "Any time you have a legitimate chance to win it is disappointing," Sprewell said. "We didn't execute well in the fourth quarter, and they did what they had to do in overtime." Sprewell finished with 23 points on 9-of 21 shooting but scored just eight points after halftime. The Hornets overcame an eight-point halftime deficit and knotted the game, 75-75, when Courtney Alexander hit a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Howard Eisley capped his best games as a Knick with 3-pointer with 2:46 remaining in the extra period that cut the deficit to 99-96. He scored 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting and dished out a career-high 14 assists. The Hornets rallied for a 97-91 overtime victory at New York on November 10. In that one, New Orleans scored the final 10 points in the extra session. "It's always painful to lose one like that," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "We are going to get there. All I ask for is good execution and to take good shots."
