Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kerry Kittles' hot start helped the New Jersey Nets start a tough road trip in dominant fashion. Kittle scored 13 of his 19 points in the first quarter and Jason Kidd had 18 points and 12 assists as the Nets rolled to a 96-82 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. New Jersey had lost three of its first five road games but looked sharp in the opener of a five-game road trip against Western Conference foes. Despite playing the second of back-to-back games, the Nets started strongly and cruised for the second straight night. "Tonight I saw exactly what I wanted to see," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "We want to make sure we're over .500 when this road trip is over." "It all started last night - with the confidence coming off last night's win," Kidd said of Friday's 120-79 rout of Cleveland. "We used yesterday as a starting point. Once the team started to hit offensively, we needed to keep them from getting back into the game. It was a good way to start a long West Coast trip." New Jersey, which scored 37 points in the opening period on Friday, closed the first quarter with a 14-3 burst. Kittles had eight points during the run and the Nets carried a 30-18 cushion into the second period. "I just wanted to get myself involved early," said Kittles, who made 6-of-8 shots in the first 12 minutes. "I've had some sub-par scoring games recently. I made a couple of shots and was working hard to get open, and I had teammates who found me." Minnesota got no closer than nine points thereafter as New Jersey shot 51 percent (43-of-85) from the floor. "We basically got our butts kicked," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "They pretty much put a clinic on us. We just never had a chance to get in any type of rhythm, offensivly or defensivly. It was disappointing when you go out and that happens. Richard Jefferson scored 14 points and Kenyon Martin added 12 for the Nets, who swept the season series from the Timberwolves for the first time since the 1991-92 campaign. Kevin Garnett had 19 points and 15 rebounds and for Minnesota, which has lost four of its last five games. "We have go to get back on the page," Garnett said. "We just sort of created a whirlwind for ourselves and never got out of it." The Timberwolves held a commanding 50-39 rebounding advantage but shot just 37 percent (32-of-86) from the floor, including 0-of-6 from 3-point range. Minnesota pulled within 45-36 with 2:44 left in the first half, but New Jersey responded with 10 of the next 12 points. Kittles and Martin each had four points in the final three minutes as the Nets took a 55-38 lead into halftime. New Jersey maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half and had its largest lead at 83-61 with 11 minutes remaining.
