Game StoryORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- During the offseason, the Orlando Magic decided against trading Mike Miller and instead signed Shawn Kemp. On Sunday, both players helped the Magic win. Miller used a screen from Kemp and drilled a long jumper with one second left, giving the shorthanded Magic a 77-75 victory over the Miami Heat. The Magic were without superstar guard Tracy McGrady, who sat out with back spasms, and forward Grant Hill, who missed his third straight game with ankle soreness. But they snapped a two-game losing streak behind Miller and Kemp. "We look forward to those days when they go down and we can step our games up," Kemp said. "The decisions that Doc (coach Doc Rivers) made to draw up shots for me keep me going." Miller had perhaps the best game of his three-year career, collecting 31 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Kemp, who continues to play himself into shape, added 14, nine and four blocks. "You know what I loved about Mike? He kept asking for the ball throughout the game," Rivers said. "He's not a guy who usually asks for the ball, but he kept going for it." A jumper by Miller gave Orlando a 75-71 lead with 1:38 to play, but the Heat answered with a long jumper from Travis Best 18 seconds later and tied it on a foul-line jumper by Eddie House with 10 seconds left. After Miami took a foul with 3.2 seconds to play and Orlando called timeout, Miller ran below a pick from Kemp, then came around a pick from Pat Garrity to the top of the arc, took the inbounds pass from Jacque Vaughn and buried a 22-footer. "Doc had enough confidence in me to draw a play for me, and Pat Garrity and Shawn Kemp set some great screens," Miller said. "Jacque threw the ball into me and it was just a step-in jump shot. It was easy." "It was drawn up for me to get the bigger piece of the defender, and for Pat to clean it up," Kemp said. "I get more out of stuff like that, and in this locker room we know what happens, even if it doesn't show up in the highlights." House's potential game-winning 35-footer fell short at the buzzer, sending Miami to its eighth loss in nine games. In the offseason, Miller's name was mentioned in trade rumors as the Magic were looking to fortify their frontcourt. Instead, they signed Kemp, a former All-Star power forward with a weight problem who had been waived by Portland. "It's coming, but no doubt I've got to get in better shape," said Kemp, who already has lost 30 pounds. "I'm definitely putting in the time it takes to do that. You're looking at a guy who's played 14 years and is still hungry to play basketball. It's nights like this that let me know that I still want to be out there." Miller said he was just going to play and not worry about the possibility of being traded. "I talked to Johnny Davis, one of the assistants, and told him that it was time for me to do something," Miller said. "Doc gave me the opportunity tonight, so I did what I could do." Point guard Darrell Armstrong had 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Magic, who held a 50-39 advantage on the boards. Rookie Caron Butler had 18 points and nine rebounds and Eddie Jones scored 16 points for the Heat, who shot just 34.5 percent (29-of-84) and committed half their 14 turnovers in the final period. "This is what we are," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "I made the point about mistakes. We had seven turnovers in the fourth quarter. We're in a one-point game and our guys are getting open shots that aren't going in. What can you do about it?" Miami held a 60-59 lead entering the fourth quarter and widened it to 67-63 on a 3-pointer by Mike James with 7:25 to go before Kemp caught fire, scoring 10 straight points for Orlando. "He's been playing great as of late," Miller said. "It just took him a while to get going and to get used to us, and now he's playing great for us." The big man made a pair of jumpers around a layup to give the Magic a 69-67 lead. Two free throws by Butler tied it, but Kemp hit two more jumpers around a basket by Jones for a 73-71 edge with 2:46 left. On the next possession, Kemp deflected a pass, then ran down the ball before it went out of bounds and slammed it off Miami's Brian Grant, giving Orlando possession. Miller hit a jumper on the next trip, setting up the finish. Vaughn scored 11 points for the Magic, who shot 42 percent (31-of-74). LaPhonso Ellis scored 10 points for the Heat. Miller had 18 points and 11 rebounds in the first half, helping Orlando to a 42-39 lead.
