Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Glenn Robinson scored a season-high 37 points and Alan Henderson grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds playing out of position as the Atlanta Hawks edged the Seattle SuperSonics in overtime, 119-116. After a layup by Seattle's Rashard Lewis with five seconds left sent the game into overtime tied at 105-105, Robinson opened the extra period with a pair of jumpers to key a 9-2 run. Lewis drained a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left to slice the deficit to 114-113, but Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Emanual Davis sank two free throws apiece around a foul shot by Lewis. Gary Payton hit a driving layup and Robinson hit 1-of-2 from the line to provide the final margin, but not before Brent Barry and Lewis missed potential game-tying 3-pointers in the last five seconds. "If we don't play defense, we don't win games," Payton said. "When you let guys like Shareef and 'Big Dog' (Robinson) play, they should kill us like that." Henderson, normally a power forward, scored 14 points subbing at center for Theo Ratliff, who sat out with the flu. "I just went out and played my role," said Henderson, who has seen sporadic action at center throughout his career. "It was the most minutes I've had in a long time." Payton finished with a season-high 32 points for Seattle, which suffered its first loss in Atlanta since Novemeber 11, 1997. "He (Payton) said nobody could stop him and nobody could," said Atlanta point guard Jason Terry, who idolized Payton growing up in Seattle. "But we got the win." Atlanta won despite committing a season-high 27 turnovers to only eight by Seattle. Robinson gave away the ball seven times and Abdur-Rahim six. Robinson matched a season high with 12 rebounds and contributed five assists. "Some games are like that," said Terry, who committed three turnovers. "We hung in there. I thought Alan Henderson played big in the absence of Theo Ratliff." "We had five minutes (in overtime) where we could have stepped up the intensity and done something," Barry said. "They went up by five pretty quickly and we just didn't recover from it." Neither team was able to build much of a lead in regulation. Atlanta went up by as many as eight points in the second quarter, but Seattle was able to hang around and trailed, 53-52, at halftime. The fourth quarter began in a 78-78 tie and neither team led by more than four points. With 54 seconds left, Abdur-Rahim hit two free throws to give the Hawks a 104-103 advantage. Ira Newble hit 1-of-2 from the line for a 105-103 lead, but as the final seconds ticked away, Barry threaded the needle from the top of the key inside to Lewis, who tied the game. "It took a big effort from everybody, it was about a balanced attack," Robinson said. "That's what we needed. One person can't do it all." Desmond Mason tied a season high with 23 points and Barry had 15 and six assists for the Sonics, who shot 47 percent (45-of-95) and were beaten on the boards, 55-32. Terry collected 15 points and 10 assists and Newble chipped in 10 points for Atlanta, which snapped a three-game losing streak. With the Hawks leading, 39-36, with 8:45 left in the second quarter, Robinson keyed a 7-2 spurt with a bucket and three free throws. Henderson hit two free throws with 5:54 left that provided the biggest game's widest margin at 46-38.
