Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Nine was a good number for the New Orleans Hornets. Led by guards David Wesley and Baron Davis, the Hornets scored on nine straight possessions during a remarkable run in the third quarter and roared to their ninth straight home win, a 106-94 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Wesley, Davis and Jamal Mashburn scored 16 points apiece for the Hornets, who improved to 9-0 in New Orleans Arena and remained one of five teams yet to lose at home. "It's great when people get behind you and don't sit on their hands," Mashburn said. "They're enjoying themselves. I hear them. Our arena may not be packed, but this crowd is enthusiastic. They definitely don't sit on their hands." The Hornets shot a season-high 54 percent (43-of-80) from the field, had seven players in double figures and committed just 10 turnovers. New Orleans trailed, 55-50, early in the third quarter before taking control with its decisive 22-2 run. Wesley scored seven points and Davis six before two free throws by Elden Campbell gave the Hornets a 72-57 lead with 3:53 left. "Defense is the name of the game," Davis said. "We had to turn it up in order to win and we knew they were a bit tired." "We turned up the energy, and it looked like they were a bit sluggish from last night," Hornets forward P.J. Brown said. "Once we got the energy level up, everything seemed to go. The game got easier and we were able to put it away." In the period, New Orleans outscored Atlanta, 37-13, and took an 83-64 lead into the final quarter. A 3-pointer by Courtney Alexander gave the Hornets their largest lead at 92-70 with 8:43 to go. Jason Terry scored 17 points for the Hawks, who have lost 10 of the last 12 meetings with the Hornets. Atlanta was coming off Tuesday's home overtime win over Seattle. "There certainly was a big difference between the first half and the second half," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "In the second half, they won the battle pretty much everywhere on the court." In the first half, the Hawks outrebounded the Hornets, 21-9, and opened a 51-46 lead, leading to some harsh halftime words from New Orleans coach Paul Silas. "There were things that I really can't repeat," he said. "It's getting too frequent that I have to do this kind of thing." A jump shot by Jason Terry gave Atlanta a 55-50 lead and Davis committed two turnovers before New Orleans caught fire. The Hawks committed four straight turnovers, leading to two free throws and a layup by Wesley and two fast-break baskets by Davis. "We knew we had an extra gear," Mashburn said. "We just have to find it a little earlier." The streak continued as Brown made a dunk and two free throws, Wesley hit a 3-pointer, Mashburn sank a jump shot and Davis threw in a running hook for a 69-57 lead with 5:38 to go, leading to Kruger's second timeout of the run. "It was a disastrous third quarter for us," Hawks forward Glenn Robinson said. "We made some turnovers that got their juice going. They got their confidence. It worked for them. We've got to get stronger with the ball." Brown made a foul shot and Campbell drained two to cap the burst. Alexander scored 14 points, Campbell added 13, Jamaal Magloire 12 and Brown 11 for the Hornets. Robinson and Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 15 points each for the Hawks, who shot 45.5 percent (35-of-77).
