Game StoryINDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller has gone up against Michael Jordan many times. On Friday night, he clearly got the better of him. Miller scored 17 of his 25 points in the pivotal third quarter to lift the red-hot Indiana Pacers to their third straight victory, a 100-84 triumph over Jordan and the Washington Wizards, who have lost five in a row. This marked the 47th time Miller had faced Jordan since entering the NBA in 1987. Only former Detroit Pistons guard Joe Dumars has gone against Jordan more, squaring off against him 48 times. Miller has had as much success as anyone against Jordan, one of the greatest players of all time who indicated Thursday that he will retire after this season. He often burned Jordan's Chicago Bulls with his clutch outside shooting, and Friday was yet another case. "We've had some great battles over the years," Miller said. "He's probably won more games. I have always tried to keep him on the defensive. I think a lot of times, God bless him, because of his talent, it's been a fear factor for most other guards. But I would never back down, and hopefully he respected that. "I always felt that if I would keep coming at him and wear him down, it would make it that much tougher for him at the offensive end. When you're going against someone like that, who has so many weapons, it makes it tough. I just always tried to do the best I could." In the third quarter, Miller drilled four 3-pointers, adding to his all-time leading total. His 17 points were one less than what Washington managed and sparked Indiana to a 78-73 lead entering the final period. "He made some big shots. He changed the momentum of the game," Jordan said. "Reggie went nuts on us in the third," Wizards coach Doug Collins said. "I told our guys this would happen." The Pacers did not need Miller's help in the fourth quarter as they scored the first six points and were in control thereafter. The Wizards made just 1-of-11 shots in the period and managed just 11 points. "It's the same old story," Collins said. "Defensively, we break down, they put pressure on us, we start playing 1-on-1 and we live on the perimeter. The minute a team starts pressing us defensively, we stop running our plays." Ron Artest scored 21 points and Jermaine O'Neal added 15 for Indiana, which has won 12 of its last 13 games. The best team in the Eastern Conference showed no ill effects of Thursday's emotional win over previously unbeaten Dallas. "We had every reason to go south after the emotional win against Dallas," Miller said. "We were lucky to be down eight at halftime. Someone had to do something. It was my night tonight. I did enough to get us back in the game and the rest of the guys picked it up." Jordan scored 14 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Jerry Stackhouse led Washington with 24 points but did not make a basket in the second half. The Wizards led by as many as 14 points in the first half before settling for a 55-47 halftime advantage behind 18 points from Stackhouse. They still held a 61-49 bulge before Miller got hot. A jumper by Miller made it 61-53, and he added Indiana's first four-point play of the season, drawing a foul from Larry Hughes on a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 61-59 with 7:13 left. "Reggie does it every time," Collins said. "He electrifies the crowd. He's a lightning rod. I have the ultimate respect for him." After a three-point play by Bryon Russell, Miller made 3-pointers 28 seconds apart to give Indiana a 65-64 lead. Two free throws by Ron Artest gave the Pacers the lead for good at 69-68 with 3:48 remaining and Miller added another 3-pointer on Indiana's next possession. "He just has a great instinct for knowing when to ignite, when to take shots and make shots," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "You can compare it to a great entertainer for knowing the audience." Jonathan Bender made a lane jumper and O'Neal sank four free throws to open the final period and give Indiana an 84-73 lead. Two free throws each by Stackhouse and Jordan made it a seven-point game, but Artest hit two from the line and converted a three-point play for an 89-77 bulge with 6:37 to go. Washington got no closer than 11 points thereafter. Brad Miller scored 13 points and Ron Mercer added 11 for the Pacers, who shot just 40 percent (30-of-75) but made 35-of-36 free throws, the best performance by any team this season. Brendan Haywood grabbed 10 rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 41 percent (31-of-75) but missed 10 free throws and committed 21 turnovers. "When you don't throw the ball away, get to the line and make free throws, you can win a game by 16 points," Thomas said. Indiana point guard Jamaal Tinsley left the game in the first quarter with a knee injury and did not return.
