Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers would have to be struggling a lot more to lose at home to the Memphis Grizzlies. Shaquille O'Neal had 28 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks and Kobe Bryant recorded his fourth triple-double of the season as the Lakers held on for a 101-91 victory over the Grizzlies. Los Angeles has lost 12 of its first 19 games this season but had little trouble continuing its domination of Memphis. The Lakers are 26-2 all time against the Grizzlies, who have never won in 15 road games against the three-time defending champions. Bryant had 24 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for his seventh career triple-double. He made 11-of-16 shots from the floor as Los Angeles shot 51 percent (40-of-79) and won for third time in its last four games at the Staples Center. "I was just kind of coasting," he said. "I put it on cruise control because my tendinitis flared up on me. So I was just staying in the rhythm of the game and not doing too much. My knees were killing me." "He played a great game, there's no doubt about it," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "I thought a couple times he should have been looking for his shot. But you can't fault that, that's what we ask as a coach." Los Angeles survived their last visit to Memphis with a 112-106 overtime victory on Friday and held off a late rally by the Grizzlies in the rematch. Memphis never led in the second half but pulled within 84-82 on Wesley Person's 3-pointer with 6:59 remaining. Derek Fisher, who scored 12 points, responded with a 3-pointer from the left corner 23 seconds later to restore the Lakers' five-point edge. Bryant followed with a turnaround jumper and Rick Fox added fast-break layup to give Los Angeles a 91-82 cushion with 3:15 left. After Person's 3-pointer cut the deficit to four, the Grizzlies missed nine consecutive shots. "Everyone time we had the chance to get it back to four we did something foolish," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "Either a bad pass on the fast break or a turnover in the backcourt and that was the frustrating part." "We made a few careless mistakes that we should not have made," Grizzlies forward Lorenzen Wright said. "All you can ask for is a chance to win in the last two minutes of the game. We just let it get away in the end." After Memphis made consecutive baskets, O'Neal made 3-of-4 free throws to stretch the lead to eight. Robert Horry buried a pair of jumpers in the final 92 seconds and Bryant had an alley-oop dunk to help seal the win for Los Angeles. "We're getting there," Bryant said. "It's a process and we're playing pretty well in spurts. We had some key stops when we needed and hit some big shots when we needed to, so it's just a matter of time." Fox scored 14 points and Horry added 11 off the bench for the Lakers, who made 10-of-15 3-pointers to overcome 20 turnovers and a dismal 11-of-20 effort from the free-throw line. "We made it a struggle because of our turnovers but we controlled the tempo and the pace of the game and the action," Jackson said. Wright scored 17 points and fellow reserve Person finished with 13 for Memphis (2-16), which has lost three straight games. "No excuses. They shot the ball really well," Brown said. "They shot the ball real well. All we're trying to do is hope that we have a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter. It's the little things, it's the discipline that separate the good teams from teams that are trying to be good." Shane Battier, Pau Gasol and rookie Drew Gooden each had 11 points as the Grizzlies shot just 37 percent (34-of-91).
