Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- David Wesley scored a season-high 25 points to compensate for the absence of Baron Davis and lead the New Orleans Hornets to a 115-90 victory over the Chicago Bulls, who have lost seven straight games. New Orleans played its second straight game without Davis, its All-Star point guard who has been sidelined with back spasms. Davis missed the first game of his NBA career Sunday as the Hornets fell at Boston. Wesley made 11-of-19 shots to eclipse his previous season high of 22 against Chicago on November 15. He led all five starters in double figures, including Jamal Mashburn, who scored 21 points. "I know I have to score," Mashburn said. "That's my main job right now. However, I am a more complete player than that. I like to pass and move the ball. I trust the guys on this team. They can hit the open jumpers, so passing is really easy." Mashburn led the Hornets with seven assists, the fifth time he has led the team this season. Davis has led New Orleans in assists in every other game. New Orleans maintained a small lead most of the way before breaking open the game with a 14-0 run late in the third quarter. Jamaal Magloire scored six of his 18 points during the spurt, which Wesley capped with a jumper to give New Orleans an 83-65 lead. "I'm very satsified with our effort, especially after the tough loss in Boston," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "On offense, we have to continue running. We can't grind out every game like we were doing early in the season. We need to get out running and we're learning that as we go." Jalen Rose led the Bulls with 19 points but committed four of Chicago's 20 turnovers. Rookie guard Jay Williams added 15 points but turned it over six times. "The stats don't lie," Wesley said. "We knew that they were up there for the lead in turnovers. So, that is what we played to. We were going to force them to make the tough passes and shots." Bulls second-year big men Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry continued to struggle. Chandler scored two points in six minutes before leaving with back pain, while Curry had six points on 1-of-5 shooting in 23 minutes. "We have to come together as a team," said Chandler, who strained his back in pregame exercises and may not play on Wednesday at Cleveland. "We have to do whatever it takes to win some games. Hopefully, this was rock bottom. We cannot let someone come into our house and embarrass us like that. This was an embarrassment for the city and the whole organization." The Bulls lost their seventh consecutive game and had their worst defensive performance of the season. "I am disappointed in how we started the game, in our effort," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "Basically what I am disappointed in is that we started out the season with the idea that we needed to grow, we needed to get better, we have to expand ourselves out. I believe we are capable of doing that. Physically, we are fine. Now it is mental. We have to learn to get better. To come home and not be able to execute, not to follow the game plan, is unacceptable. It is tough to watch." The Bulls won their first two games of the season but have won just twice in 15 games since.
