Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- It may not be among his vintage late-game performances, but Michael Jordan got the job done down the stretch. Enduring a rough night at the line, Jordan made four free throws in the final 74 seconds as the Washington Wizards posted an 88-83 triumph over the Detroit Pistons. Jordan, who missed five of his first 12 attempts from the line, finished with 21 points, as did Jerry Stackhouse, who made just 7-of-20 shots in his first game against Detroit since being traded by the Pistons on September 12. Guard Larry Hughes chipped in 17 points and a season-high 10 rebounds as Washington rallied to win when trailing after three quarters for the first time in 10 games this season. "We struggled to win," Washington coach Doug Collins said. "We played some good basketball but we had stretches where we just broke down. Tonight, we stayed tough." "It definitely is a big win for us," Stackhouse said. "We have been playing some pretty good basketball but we just haven't been getting over the hump and winning games." Chucky Atkins led Detroit with 17 points but missed a wide open 3-pointer with the Pistons trailing, 86-83, with nine seconds left. Clifford Robinson and former Wizard Richard Hamilton added 16 points apiece for Detroit. "There was a definite adrenaline rush," Hamilton said. "I was excited about this one. I really wanted it, but we lost and I'm disappointed." A long 3-pointer by Jon Barry with 94 seconds to go tied the game, 81-81. Hughes missed a 27-footer 18 seconds later but Jordan sliced through the key, grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled by Robinson. He made both from the line to give Washington an 83-81 lead and, after Ben Wallace missed a short jumper in the lane with just under a minute remaining, Stackhouse grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Stackhouse and Hamilton exchanged single free throws and Detroit had a chance to tie the game when Robinson went to the line with 16 seconds to go. But Robinson missed his second attempt, and Washington's Christian Laettner grabbed the rebound and found Jordan, who was fouled by Robinson with 12 seconds remaining. Jordan made both attempts for an 86-83 lead. When Detroit came out of a timeout, all it could muster was a long 3-point attempt by Atkins. Laettner grabbed another rebound and found Stackhouse, who sealed the game with two free throws with five seconds to go. "You got to think that Michael Jordan is going to make his free throws," Collins added. "I was very pleased that Jerry stepped up as well after he missed one." "It was a hard fought game," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "Neither team played great. They made plays when they had to. We had some opportunities but we made a few mistakes at the wrong time and it cost us." Washington made 23-of-34 free throws attempts while Detroit was 11-of-14. The discrepancy was not lost on Detroit. "It is always hard to overcome 20 free throws," Barry said. "We took 14, they took 34. Every time we started to make a push, they were back on the line. There was one play at the end, where Michael got an offensive rebound, I think it was Larry Hughes who missed. He came around the corner and it looked like he just lost the ball but they said someone grabbed him." "We knocked our free throws down," Jordan said. "We had a lot of them. We knocked them down down the stretch. This is the type of game where we had to gut it out." Robinson hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give Detroit a 45-39 lead. The Pistons still led, 63-61, despite grabbing just one offensive rebound in 36 minutes.
