Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Miami Heat coach Pat Riley has enjoyed some fine times in Los Angeles, but the Clippers are doing their best to establish a new trend. Elton Brand continued his strong play with 25 points and 13 rebounds as the Clippers posted their fourth straight win over the Heat, an easy 89-80 triumph. Brand, who is second in the league to Minnesota's Kevin Garnett with 16 double-doubles, scored eight points in the first quarter, when Los Angeles bolted to a 17-4 lead and never trailed thereafter. Brand also added to his league-leading total with five blocks. "You can't go out there nervous," Brand said. "You have to attack but I think we are turning the corner." Andre Miller also had a big opening quarter for the Clippers, who won for just the fourth time in 11 home games. But Los Angeles remained tough against Miami, winning the two meetings between the teams this season by a total of 28 points. "I have no explanation for their recent success against us," said Riley, who is 59-16 against the Clippers - his most victories against any team. "They are a good team and we don't match up with them well." "Unbelievable, You would not believe that" said Heat guard Eddie Jones of Los Angeles' recent success against Miami. "We've become a tentative basketball team. Instead of playing the game and just playing hard, we're always looking for somebody else to do something all the time." Even with the Clippers' four straight victories over the Heat, Miami holds a 21-9 edge in the all-time series. "We've just got to find a way to win games," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "Regardless of if they are ugly or pretty, right now we've just got to get our confidence up." "It's a good feeling because they are a tough team," Brand said. "We are always glad to win against them." Riley, who coached the Los Angeles Lakers to four titles in the 1980s, brought a much less talented team into the Staples Center on Wednesday. The Heat never got closer than nine points in the second half, trailed by as many as 18 and fell to 5-13. "We were just not ready to play," Riley added. "We started the game in an absolute sleepwalk, not attacking." The game was tied, 2-2, just under three minutes into the contest when Los Angeles' Eric Piatkowski hit a free throw that ignited a 15-2 burst. Miller had five points and Brand four in the spurt. Miami whittled the deficit to 38-35 with 3:15 left in the half but Piatkowski had seven points in an 11-2 run that closed the second quarter. Miami shot just 34 percent (15-of-44) over the opening 24 minutes. The Heat never got closer than nine in the third quarter and trailed 73-55 heading into the final period. Brand had eight points and four rebounds in the quarter. The Clippers led 79-61 with 7:53 left before the Heat put together a 9-0 run but got no closer. "I knew they would make some kind of run," Gentry concluded. "They are a Pat Riley team. They are not going to quit playing, it doesn't matter if they are down 30." Eddie House and Malik Allen led Miami with 12 points apiece.
