Game StoryNEW YORK (Ticker) -- In a reversal of roles, Grant Hill stepped up in the absence of Tracy McGrady. Hill collected 16 points and a season-high 15 rebounds as the Orlando Magic overcame McGrady's absence to post an 87-85 victory over the New York Knicks. "Today was a very good complete game for me without T-Mac and his 31-point average," said Hill, who played 40 minutes. Still at less than 100 percent following multiple surgeries on his left ankle, Hill has had trouble with back-to-back games. But the star forward was called on to play extra minutes with McGrady - the NBA's leading scorer - sidelined with a sprained left ankle. Hill hit a crucial baseline jumper with 1:01 remaining, giving Orlando an 86-83 lead. "He hung in there tough tonight and this was one night I listened to him for not taking him out of the game," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "He stepped up big, hitting that baseline jumper to give us a three-point lead with a minute to play." After the Knicks closed to 86-85 on Othella Harrington's follow shot with 35 seconds left, Hill missed a foul-line jumper with 12.7 seconds left. The Knicks could not take advantage as Kurt Thomas lost control of the ball after it was knocked out of his hands from behind by Shawn Kemp. Darrell Armstrong gave New York a chance by making only 1-of-2 from the line with 2.1 seconds to go. Again the Knicks failed to execute as Howard Eisley, hounded by Armstrong outside the 3-point line on the right wing, failed to get off a shot before time expired. "I don't know if we felt the pass to Allan (Houston) was a good one or not, so we didn't make that," New York coach Don Chaney said. "We didn't get the pass to Spree (Latrell Sprewell). The last option was the option we got, which was to kick the ball to Kurt and hand it back to Howard for a drive. But you have to give Orlando credit for shutting down the penetration." "All I said was Allan Houston will not catch that ball," Rivers said. "Spree tried to come back to the ball but he couldn't get the ball back." The loss snapped a season-high three-game winning streak for the Knicks, who rallied from an 18-point deficit to take a 75-70 lead early in the fourth quarter. Houston scored 31 points and sparked the Knicks' comeback. But New York went cold in the final period, scoring just 12 points. "We lost the game in the fourth quarter," Sprewell said. "Twelve points against the worst D, no excuse." Houston was 12-of-19 from the field, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range. In Monday's 125-93 win over Cleveland, he scored 29 points and also made 5-of-10 3-pointers. Mike Miller scored 23 points for Orlando, including the Magic's first 11 in the opening 2 1/2 minutes. "It wasn't a pretty one, but we won," Rivers said. "It was a gut win for us tonight with T-Mac not in the lineup. Again, we will take it any way. A win is a win." The Magic ripped off a spurt in the second period to open a 46-28 cushion. But New York clamped down on Miller and outscored the Magic 21-8 over the final 5 1/2 minutes of the first half to close within 54-49 at intermission. Thomas' follow gave the Knicks a 75-70 lead with 11:24 remaining, but New York scored just six points over the next six minutes. "We struggled throughout the game tonight," Thomas said. "We played a good third quarter, but we couldn't get it done down the stretch. This one hurts a lot because nobody likes to lose, especially on the turnover." Kemp scored six straight points during one stretch, including a pair from the line that gave Orlando the lead for good, 78-77, with just over eight minutes left. Miller's jumper made it 84-79 with 5:06 to play. Latrell Sprewell and Houston hit two from the line to make it 84-83 with 1:59 left. Both offenses struggled in the second half, with New York outscoring Orlando, 36-33. Eisley scored 16 points and Sprewell and Thomas added 11 apiece for the Knicks. Horace Grant contributed 14 off the bench for the Magic and Pat Garrity chipped in with 11.
