Game StorySALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 19 of his season-high 29 points and pulled down 10 of his 15 rebounds in the second half to lead the Utah Jazz to a 93-85 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. "Everyone played well," Malone said. "It's a win that will get us back on track." The Jazz led throughout the second half by as many as 13 points, but the Lakers kept chipping away and got within four points on several occasions. However, Malone provided two shots that buried Los Angeles. "He played with such tremendous confidence," Jazz guard John Stockton said. "He's the man and he always has been." With three minutes left, Malone gave Utah an 85-74 lead with a 3-pointer, just the 84th of his 18-year career. Two minutes later, Malone iced the game with a falling, fadeaway jumper from just outside the lane that gave the Jazz an insurmountable 10-point edge. "That's the Karl Malone of old," said Utah forward Matt Harpring, who had 14 points and nine rebounds. "It was great. It really was. He hit big shots when he needed to, he rebounded the ball and had a good game." Along with Stockton, his long-time teammate, Malone also was instrumental in building Utah's lead. The duo combined for all the points in a 13-4 run that opened the second half and gave the Jazz a 57-44 lead. "The third quarter hurt," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "Obviously an 18-13 quarter hurt." Stockton scored eight of his 10 points after halftime and handed out 11 assists. Another of Malone's impressive shots came in the third quarter, when he twice faked Lakers forward Slava Medvedenko before sinking a 15-foot jump shot. The Jazz won their fifth consecutive home game, while the Lakers lost for the ninth time in 11 road games. Superstar guard Kobe Bryant struggled for Los Angeles, making just 5-of-14 shots and scoring 17 points. He had only two points in the pivotal third quarter. The Jazz controlled Bryant two nights after holding Indiana Pacers star Reggie Miller scoreless in a 102-91 victory. "You are not going to stop those guys," Malone said. "You've got to know when to go help your teammates. You don't close your eyes and run and help. You've got to play your own guy first and then go and help." Shaquille O'Neal led the Lakers with 23 points but struggled with his shooting. O'Neal shot 8-of-23 from the field, including 4-of-14 in the second half. "There's really no excuse," O'Neal said. "We're all professionals and we have to be ready. You know it seems like sometimes we have five out there and a couple of guys don't know what's going on." O'Neal, Bryant and Derek Fisher combined to score 50 of the Lakers' 85 points.
