Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Penny Hardaway scored five of his 18 points in the final three minutes as the Phoenix Suns overcame early struggles to defeat the Indiana Pacers, 102-96. Hardaway capped the Suns' game-ending 10-3 run by hitting a pair of free throws with eight seconds left after rebounding Reggie Miller's 3-point attempt. The 6-7 guard had eight rebounds. The Suns, who have come back to win seven times this season after trailing by double digits, trailed by as many as nine points in the first quarter as the Pacers shot 62 percent (13-of-21) from the field. But Phoenix led 58-56 at halftime on 59 percent shooting (26-of-44). "We stayed aggressive the entire night," Hardaway said. "We didn't worry about the turnovers as long as they were aggressive turnovers. We weren't just coming down and playing passive, and I think that's what got us a win tonight. We just stayed aggressive the entire game." Indiana held a 74-73 lead entering the final period but lost for the first time in 15 games when leading after three quarters. The Pacers missed their first six shots of the fourth quarter as the Suns went on 8-0 run that included five points from Jake Tsakalidis, who scored a season-high 13 points in his first game back from the injured list with a bulging disk. The Pacers regained the lead with a 14-4 run, but the Suns stayed close. The lead changed hands four times before Shawn Marion started the decisive run with a 3-pointer from the right corner with just over three minutes left. "It was a close game down to the end," Pacers center Jermaine O'Neal said. "We didn't make it real physical for them, we didn't clamp down on defense and we ddin't attack them offensively or defensively." Jermaine O'Neal led the Pacers with 25 points but committed a key error. With 2:09 left and Indiana down by four, O'Neal hit Bo Outlaw in the back of the head and was called for an offensive foul. He then spiked the ball and was called for a technical foul. Outlaw gave up three inches and 22 pounds to O'Neal, but matched up well enough with the Indiana center over 32 minutes that Phoenix did not have to double-team him. "Bo's energy was outstanding," Phoenix coach Frank Johnson said. "Normally when I look at the stat sheet, if a player doesn't get 20 minutes of playing time, you have to do conditioning. Bo had so much energy, he did enough for all the guys that didn't play and didn't get 20 minutes, so I let them have off conditioning because of his energy." While Outlaw provided a spark for Phoenix, Indiana was somewhat sluggish on the fourth game of a six-game road trip. The Pacers allowed a season-worst 51 percent opponent's field-goal percentage. "They did everything right tonight," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "The concern is this is the second game in a row that a team has shot over 50 percent against us. We haven't had much practice, and there has been a lot of slippage on the defensive side." The Pacers were not helped by their poor rebounding performance. Indiana was outrebounded 44-29 and allowed Phoenix to grab 14 offensive boards. Suns rookie Amare Stoudemire had eight rebounds, including three on the offensive end.
