Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Antoine Walker scored 25 points and Tony 
Delk netted 16 of his 20 in the first half as the Boston Celtics
easily dispatched the woeful New York Knicks, 91-80.

The Celtics used the final 78 seconds of the first half to pull
away from the Knicks.  Leading 42-38, Boston got a free throw
from Walker, a lay-in from Vin Baker and Delk's 3-pointer to
head into the break with a 10-point lead.

New York was unable to cut into the margin while falling behind
by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter.

Paul Pierce collected 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists
and Tony Battie chipped in with 11 and nine as the Celtics
posted their sixth straight win over their long-time rivals.

Allan Houston, who leads the Knicks with 24.9 points per game,
failed to score in the first half and finished with seven
points.  New York shot just two free throws the entire first
half.

"I just struggled tonight, really," said Houston, who was
3-for-13 from the floor.  "I really can't put my finger on what
it was, I just really didn't have a good night."

Latrell Sprewell scored 13 of his 15 points in the first quarter
to lead New York, which fell to 1-5 on the road.

"I think the entire way we played was discouraging," Sprewell
said.

In a season already filled with low moments, the Knicks' third
quarter ranks among the worst.  The Knicks shot 5-of-18 and
scored just two baskets over an 8 1/2-minute stretch.
Defensively, they weren't much better, sending the Celtics to
the foul line 17 times, where they made 15.

After Houston showed signs of heating up with a 3-pointer that
cut the deficit to 55-45 with nine minutes to go in the third
period, Battie dunked, Walker sank a short hook shot and Pierce
drained an 11-footer to build a 16-point lead with 7:42
remaining.

Pierce scored nine points in the quarter.

"We came into the half and said, 'We can't let up,'" said
Pierce, who did the job defensively on Houston.  "We had
momentum going into the half.  We just wanted to come out an put
a little pressure on them."

After Pierce's tip-in gave Houston an 87-60 advantage with 7:26
to play, the Knicks came to life.  With most of Boston's
starters on the bench, New York went on a 15-2 run to pull
within 89-75 on Lavor Postell's 3-pointer with 4:35 to go.

But New York only managed a pair of buckets by Lee Nailon
thereafter and fell to its second straight defeat.

The Celtics shot just 37 percent (29-of-79) from the field but
held the Knicks to 36 percent (29-of-80).  The difference was at
the free throw line, where Boston went 27-for-33 while New York
was 16-of-17.

"You've got to have 'X' amount of free throws," Knicks coach Don
Chaney said.  "When you're not moving and not attacking, you're
not going to get to the line.  We weren't in attack mode. I
don't have an answer for why we played so passive tonight."

Delk, who fell one point shy of his season high, hit three
3-pointers and scored 11 points in the second quarter.

"Tonight, I just put the focus in," Delk said.  "It was
important to come out and play aggressive on both ends of the
court.  It started with me being aggressive on offense, getting
myself involved."

In the first quarter, Sprewell paced the Knicks with 13 points
in 6-of-8 shooting, while the rest of the team managed just
4-of-15 from the field.

The Knicks took their last lead 2 1/2 minutes into the contest
when Howard Eisley drained a 3-pointer.
