Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady returned with 27 points and Mike Miller added 22 as the Orlando Magic built a big lead and held on for an 88-78 victory over the Washington Wizards. McGrady, who leads the NBA with 31.5 points per game, sat out Wednesday's win at New York with a sprained ankle. But he came back to make 12-of-29 shots and contribute nine assists and seven rebounds, helping the Magic to their fifth win in six games. Miller, who picked up the slack for McGrady with 23 points on Wednesday, scored eight in a 10-1 burst Friday that opened the second half and gave the Magic a 23-point lead. The Wizards cut the deficit to 67-54 after three quarters and pulled within 80-75 with 2:49 to go on a three-point play by Jerry Stackhouse, who scored 11 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter. Miller answered with a beautiful baseline layup at the 2:21 mark and McGrady sank a fadeaway jumper 25 seconds later to rebuild the lead to nine points. "When they made their push, we were taking a lot of jump shots," Miller said. "I had an opportunity to take a jumper off a screen, but I was trying to get the hoop and, if not finish, get fouled and get to the free throw line, and get two points." Michael Jordan scored 16 points on 7-of-21 shooting for the Wizards, who had their two-game winning streak snapped. Jordan was hounded by Grant Hill, who scored just five points but never let Jordan get into a rhythm. "You've got to stay in front of him," Hill said. "It was fun being out there against him. Even though I didn't personally play well, it was fun competing." "I thought he was sensational and I thought that took its toll on the other end for Grant," Rivers said. "He was locked in on Michael. He stayed down." A jumper by Shawn Kemp gave the Magic the lead for good at 22-20 with 2:21 left in the first quarter. Kemp scored 11 of his season-high 15 points in the opening period. "Just working, man, just trying to get better," said Kemp, who continues to play his way into shape. "Not a whole lot to it." A fadeaway jumper by Hill capped a 10-0 run that began the second quarter and gave Orlando a 39-27 lead with 7:58 left. "We can't play at that fast a tempo," Wizards coach Doug Collins said. "We got seduced into that early, because we got some quick baskets." Miller capped his flurry at the outset of the third quarter by putting home an alley-oop pass from McGrady to give the Magic their largest lead at 59-36 with 8:28 remaining. "It's one of those strange games where for 2 1/2 quarters, we were sensational," Rivers said. "And then it was like we turned it off and they never really turned it on." Hill swept 10 rebounds and Miller added nine for the Magic, who shot 45 percent (37-of-82) and held a 45-40 edge on the glass. Larry Hughes had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Christian Laettner added 11 and seven for the Wizards, who shot just 35 percent (29-of-82). Stackhouse also had eight assists. "The first quarter and a half, we tried to match their intensity and tempo. We lost our poise," Jordan said. "From that point on, we played pretty much a solid game."
