Game StoryPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat played the worst first half in franchise history, and things did not get much better thereafter as they lost to the Portland Trail Blazers, 88-69. Portland scored 22 of the game's first 24 points, including nine by Dale Davis, and Miami finished the first half with a team record-low 22 points. The Heat trailed by 26 points at halftime and by as many as 28. "We had no focus at all," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We lost any kind of toughness at all when they started to drill us. I think we were playing more so not to be embarrassed than to try to win. That's what happened in the first six to seven minutes of the game." Miami came within three points of matching the worst half in NBA history. Three teams have scored 19 points in a half, most recently the Charlotte Hornets, who did it on November 11, 2000 at New York. "We did not get it done," said Miami forward Brian Grant, who led all rebounders with 11. "We got our (butt) kicked right from the jump. ... It was embarrassing. It was just an embarrassing effort from us. You don't even have to be great to beat us. The Blazers came out and played and won." The Trail Blazers did not play particularly well after their opening run but were still more than up to the Heat's challenge. Portland shot 40 percent (32-of-80) from the field and made just 22-of-33 free throws. "Obviously we got off to a good start," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "That's what really carried us throughout the game." Bonzi Wells led the Blazers with 17 points and seven rebounds. Zach Randolph added 11 points off the bench for Portland. Eddie House led the Heat with 15 points off the bench. He hit an open 3-pointer from the corner to beat the final buzzer and keep the Heat from their second 20-point loss of the season. Miami's Malik Allen made 7-of-12 shots and scored 14 points. Mike James had nine assists off the bench for the Heat. The Heat fell to 2-8 on the road this season.
