Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- After enduring a horrendous collapse, the Dallas Mavericks were on the right end of a second-half comeback. Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points and Nick Van Exel added 19 off the bench as the Mavericks rallied for a 121-116 victory over the Golden State Warriors. Dallas squandered a 30-point lead against the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, and the loss seemed to have an effect. The Mavericks trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half and were down by 10 with nine minutes left before salvaging what could have been a devastating loss. "Mentally it just took us a while to get into it," said Dallas assistant coach Del Harris, who replaced an ejected Don Nelon. "Our energy was little lacking in the first half. In the second half we really turned the corner, focused and came up with the win." "We had a tough one last night, so we knew that we had to dig deep," Van Exel said. "We've been playing with a will that we aren't going to lose, we aren't going to be beat." Dallas went on a 15-4 run midway through the fourth quarter and took a 105-104 lead on Van Exel's runner with six minutes left. After Golden State's Gilbert Arenas buried a 3-pointer, the Mavericks scored 10 of the next 12 points to take control. Steve Nash sank two free throws to forge a 107-107 tie and Shawn Bradley followed with a layup to give Dallas the lead for good with 5:26 to go. "It was the will to win and the fact that they couldn't stop Dirk," Nash said. Nowitzki had a pair of layups before the Mavericks made 6-of-8 free throws in the final 32 seconds to seal their 18th win in 20 games this season. Nash scored 14 points and Bradley had 13 and 12 rebounds for Dallas, which has won 14 straight meetings with Golden State. Nowitzki made 11-of-19 shots from the floor and 12-of-13 free throws as the Mavericks shot 49 percent (40-of-82) from the floor and 88 percent (36-of-41) from the line. "I've got to split the game ball about six ways, because everybody stepped up," Harris said. Antawn Jamison had 26 points and 14 rebounds and Earl Boykins scored a career-high 23 points off the bench for the Warriors, who made just 7-of-25 shots in the fourth quarter. "We controlled the game for 3 1/2 quarters," Golden State coach Eric Musselman said. "When the score is tied with seven minutes to go, you're still very much in the game. We need to maintain that energy." "We just have to learn how to finish games," Boykins said. "We're going to have to learn that when teams make runs we can't put our heads down. We let ourselves get discouraged and they came back." Jason Richardson scored 22 points and Arenas finished with 13 points and 11 assists. Troy Murphy had 10 points and 11 rebounds as Golden State held a commanding 55-36 edge on the glass.
