Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn had 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists as the New Orleans Hornets rallied from a 21-point deficit to post a 94-88 triumph over the Milwaukee Bucks. Mashburn made just 7-of-20 shots from the field but was 8-of-8 from the line. His effort highlighted a big night from the stripe for New Orleans, which shot 87 percent (33-of-38). "We didn't want to rely on jumpers," Mashburn said. "I think we did that too much in the first half. In the second half we came out and created opportunities, took it to the hole and got to the line." A solid performance at the charity stripe was important on a night when New Orleans shot just 39 percent (27-of-69) from the field. "We had to do something," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We were just a step slower on offense. We started pounding it inside and it really helped us (to draw fouls)." Baron Davis and P.J. Brown added 20 points apiece for the Hornets, who posted their fourth consecutive win. New Orleans outscored Milwaukee, 60-38, in the second half, 26-15 in the fourth quarter. "We played extremely solid defense," said Davis, who had two steals. "We forced them into a lot of contested jumpers and didn't let them get into a rhythm." Milwaukee built a 50-29 lead late in the second quarter but fell apart down the stretch. Ray Allen led the Bucks with 29 points but committed six of Milwaukee's 15 turnovers. "The way we let them come back and steal this game from us tonight is very frustrating," said Bucks forward Tim Thomas, who had 12 points and five rebounds. "We had put them in a hole in the first half, but we let up defensively in the second half and they took advantage. As a team we need to learn how to execute for a full 48 minutes." Anthony Mason had 11 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Bucks, who have lost three in a row. Guard Michael Redd scored 16 points off the bench for Milwaukee. The Bucks played without starting point guard Sam Cassell, who is day-to-day with a strained hip flexor. Kevin Ollie had 12 points and eight assists in Cassell's place. "I think Kevin right now is playing the best he ever played in his career," Bucks coach George Karl said. "He's confident and his turnover-to-assist ratio is the best in the league. ... I thought he had a solid game again tonight. We could have completed it with a win." Ollie played 37 minutes but was plagued by foul trouble as he committed five personals.
