Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- This is not the way the New Orleans Hornets wanted to go into their longest road trip of the season. The Hornets were beaten at home for the first time this season, absorbing a 94-90 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, who got another big game from Elton Brand and won their third straight game. In their first season in the Crescent City, the Hornets have turned New Orleans Arena into one of the league's toughest stops. They won their first 11 home games and were one of four teams that had yet to lose at home. Before leaving on a season-high seven-game road trip, the Hornets stumbled against the Clippers. They were pounded on the boards and saw scoring forward Jamal Mashburn shut down by Tremaine Fowlkes. Brand scored 29 points for his sixth straight game of 20 or more points. His basket with 3:03 remaining gave Los Angeles the lead for good at 83-81. "There are a lot of plays being called for me," said Brand, who made 12-of-22 shots. "I've got a lot of confidence. When you hit a lot of shots, you feel confident." Trailing 86-83 in the final minute, the Hornets had a chance to tie, but Courtney Alexander missed a 3-pointer. The Clippers made 8-of-8 free throws thereafter, the first six by Andre Miller and the last two by Quentin Richardson. Miller had 18 points and eight assists and Richardson added 16 and eight rebounds for the Clippers, who improved to 4-5 on the road in the opener of a four-game trip. Last season, Los Angeles did not win its fourth road game until January 29. "We've lost a couple of tough games that we really could have closed out," Brand said. "So we close out a game like this against the New Orleans Hornets and it's great for us." Hounded by Fowlkes and Brand, Mashburn missed 14 of his first 16 shots before scoring nine points in the final minute. He finished with 15 of 5-of-20 shooting. "We did a good job of defensing Mashburn," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "We used a combination of man and zone against him. We knew they liked to run certain plays for him, and when they would get into a set, we would switch to a zone." Baron Davis scored a season-high 33 points for the Hornets, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. They begin their trip Thursday at Utah. The only under-.500 teams they face are Golden State and the three-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers. "You don't cry over spilled milk," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "You just go out and take care of business on the road. Now we'll see where we are. It's going to be a big challenge for us." "I'm looking forward to the trip because it's going to be a test of our character," Davis said. The Clippers were in control for most of the game until the Hornets rallied behind Davis, who scored 14 points in the final period. His jumper gave New Orleans a 76-75 lead with 5:50 to play. The teams traded baskets before Brand took over, scoring the Clippers' next nine points to give them an 86-81 lead with 40 seconds left. "It's funny, because I didn't really think about it," Brand said. "I said, `So they're up one now.' So I said, `All right, I'm open, shoot.' Don't hesitate, like coach says. Coach says if he's dumb enough to have you out there, you're dumb enough to shoot it. I was open, so I shot it up there, and it went in. I had a feeling. I had a flow going. I took the next (shot), and I made some free throws." Mashburn made two free throws and Clippers rookie Marko Jaric missed two, but LA sealed it at the line after Alexander's miss. Sean Rooks had nine rebounds and Brand, Miller and Fowlkes pulled down seven for the Clippers, who held a 46-31 advantage on the glass and shot 45 percent (33-of-73). David Wesley scored 16 points for the Hornets, who shot 43 percent (35-of-82), including 9-of-30 from the arc. The 3-point attempts were one shy of the franchise record and a result of being unable to solve LA's zone defense. "I don't think we handled it very well," Silas said. "We could never really get in sync. Our jumpers were not falling and we kept shooting them." New Orleans was held to 15 points in the first quarter and 35 points in the first half, both season lows. Particularly affected was Mashburn, who missed all seven of his shots. "With guys like Corey (Maggette) and Lamar (Odom) out, I want to take advantage of this opportunity that I have," said Fowlkes, who did a credible job against Minnesota's Kevin Garnett on Saturday. "I'm a pretty good defender, and with the strategies that coach has given me, as well as the team, we're just trying to use those tools and execute them on the court." "Tre Fowlkes had another great game against another big-time player," Brand said. The Clippers held a 43-35 halftime lead but were caught at 60-60 late in the third quarter. Richardson made two free throws and Keyon Dooling sank a 3-pointer before the end of the period.
