Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Lucious Harris scored 10 of his 12 points in the pivotal third quarter as the New Jersey Nets ran away from the Phoenix Suns for a 106-93 victory. After playing to a 49-49 halftime tie, the Nets used a 25-5 run to outscore the Suns, 34-13, in the third quarter. Richard Jefferson scored nine of his 19 points in the period, while ex-Sun Jason Kidd had seven of his 20 points and five of his seven assists. "In the third quarter, we were really into the game," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "Our defensive intensity and our effort really turned it around." The Suns led by as many as 12 points in the first half as ex-Net Stephon Marbury scored 12 points before intermission. Shawn Marion, who had 12 points and 11 rebounds, collected nine of each in the first half. "Those guys were the better team," Marbury said. "They played well tonight. I don't think Shawn, Penny (Hardaway) and myself came out the way we should have in the second half. We played bad because of ourselves, not because of them. We were like two different teams from the first half to the second half." The Nets trailed 36-24 with 10:02 left in the second quarter but began to assert themselves, taking the lead with a 19-6 surge. "We got everything started in the second quarter," Jefferson said. "It continued through the second half." The Nets shot 52 percent (25-of-48) in the second half and held the Suns to 38.5 percent (15-of-39). New Jersey also benefited from 10 turnovers by Phoenix in the second half. "We started to settle for jump shots because they got physical with us," Suns coach Frank Johnson said. "I have to credit their defense." New Jersey extended its home record to 10-1, including wins in the first three games of a five-game homestand. Rookie center Amare Stoudemire had 19 points and 14 rebounds for Phoenix, which has lost five straight road games. Marion, Marbury and Hardaway all sat out the fourth quarter. "I think they were motivated to come out and play (much) harder than last game," Stoudemire said. "They were defensively motivated. They came down to Phoenix and I think we played pretty good defense. They were not shooting too well. We came here to New Jersey and did the opposite. They played a great game. They ran their plays and executed well. They were hitting their open shots." The Nets avenged the Suns' 82-75 victory on November 27 at America West Arena.
