Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Richard Jefferson made Michael Jordan look every bit of his 39 years. Jefferson scored 21 points and Jason Kidd notched his second triple-double of the season as the New Jersey Nets extended the NBA's longest current winning streak in the NBA to five with a 79-65 victory over the Washington Wizards. Jefferson appeared to relish the times he was matched up with one of the game's greatest players. He used his athleticism to exploit the older Jordan, who was held in check with 12 points on 5-of-20 shooting. "Right now, he's just a person," Jefferson said. "He's not the man I grew up idolizing. He's not the guy that goes out and scores 40 on any given night and 50 if he's got a hot hand. I still have so much respect for him." "I don't know where we are right now," Jordan said. "We have been in a funk. We need something to get us back in a good rhythm." Kidd finished with 11 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds for his 48th career triple-double. But the Nets were sluggish on offense, keeping the offensively challenged Wizards in the game. A jumper by Larry Hughes cut Washington's deficit to 68-63, and the Wizards got back the ball with a chance to creep closer. Jordan was rejected by Jefferson and the ball ended up in the hands of Lucious Harris, who was flagrantly fouled by Hughes on a breakaway. Harris made his free throws and Kidd converted a layup on the ensuing possession. Kenyon Martin and Jefferson added baskets for a 13-point cushion with 70 seconds left. "In the fourth quarter with about three minutes left, we clamped down on the defensive end," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "We got out and got some easy baskets. The team was aggressive offensively and that is what got us a 'W.'" Washington's Jerry Stackhouse did not play in the fourth quarter. Stackhouse scored eight of his 14 points in the third period and seemed to be finding his stroke. "I just felt like the team we had out there was doing a pretty good job," Wizards coach Doug Collins said. "We got right back in the game, we got it down to three or four. So I just left Michael and Larry and T-Lue (Tyronn Lue) out there together." "I found a rhythm, but the guys on the court were playing well," Stackhouse said. "The coach decided to let it roll out; I can't have a problem with it." The Wizards were held to the lowest total in franchise history after shooting only 37 percent (26-of-71). Stackhouse was just 5-of-18, although he made 3-of-5 shots in the third period. The 65 points was the least ever allowed by the Nets. "We really brought the Nets down to our level tonight," Collins said. "I am sure Byron Scott is wondering which team he saw play tonight. It was frustrating for me because we were stagnant out there on the court." Jefferson got off to a hot start by making all five shots in the first quarter for 12 points as New Jersey took a 22-14 lead. He victimized Jordan on a number of occasions by simply beating him down the court. "I just tried to run out," Jefferson said. "I got some open looks, J-Kidd hit me early. I was just feeling it. Guys got me the ball in a good position." Washington had just four baskets in the first quarter and added six more in the second. New Jersey took its largest lead at 36-20 on two foul shots by Harris with 3:47 left before halftime. The Wizards scored eight of the next 10 points to get within 10 at intermission. The Nets went cold to start the fourth, going scoreless for almost five minutes. Jordan's jumper narrowed the deficit to 57-55 until Kidd was re-inserted. Kidd and Aaron Williams had baskets to restore a six-point lead. "To make that shot was big, it kind of got us going," Kidd said. "We finished up the homestand on a positive note." Martin finished with 19 points and Harris netted 11. Kidd made just 5-of-17 shots as New Jersey shot 39 percent (29-of-74). Hughes collected 19 points and 10 rebounds for Washington, which committed 22 turnovers. Jordan led the team with four assists.
