Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- In a game much better than anyone anticipated, no one was better than Ricky Davis. The red-hot Davis had 27 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 111-104 victory over the Denver Nuggets, who wasted their best offensive showing of the season. The Cavaliers (5-20) came in as the NBA's movable object, allowing a league-worst 100.9 points per game. The Nuggets (6-18) represented the resistible force, scoring a league-low 79.4 points per contest. However, the teams spent most of the game racing up and down the court in a highly entertaining contest. The pace seemed to better suit the Cavaliers, who had three players with at least 27 points. "It was a fun game and I'm glad we won it," Cavs coach John Lucas said. Davis made 10-of-19 shots as he continued a stellar week. In his last four games, he has eclipsed 40 points twice and is averaging 34 per game. "It's going good for me," he said. "I'm shooting the ball well. My teammates are finding me open." Rookie Dajuan Wagner scored 29 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 27 and a career-high seven blocks for the Cavs, who shot a sizzling 57 percent (43-of-75) and won for the third time in their last four home games. James Posey scored 21 points to lead six players in double figures for the Nuggets, who have lost four in a row and nine of 10. They reached triple figures for the first time this season but also allowed a season high in points. "We made some good offensive plays, and Cleveland is a team that tries to outscore you, very simply," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "You look at their defensive numbers, and they rank last in the league. We were more productive in shooting the basketball and running our sets, but at the same time, Cleveland helped us there." "I'm sure they're upset that they gave up 111 points, but we've been scoring the ball real well," Lucas said. "In order for us to score a lot of points, we give up a lot of points." Davis opened the fourth quarter with a dunk, giving Cleveland a 91-86 lead and starting a 10-2 run. His flying reverse layup turned into a three-point play before Ilgauskas knocked down a jumper to give the Cavs their largest lead at 99-88 with 8:39 to go. "I thought the play that made the difference was Ricky Davis' reverse layup that put us up by nine points with about nine minutes remaining in the game," Lucas said. "It was the first time it looked like someone was going to establish a margin." An off-balance jumper by Davis made it 108-100 with 2:44 remaining, but Rodney White had two free throws, a steal and an alley-oop dunk to halve the deficit just over a minute later. However, Denver did not score again. Juwan Howard traveled, Posey missed a 3-pointer and the Nuggets had two shots blocked on their final possession. "I think what happens with our team is we start pressing," Bzdelik said. "Individuals defer to their competitive spirit and try too hard. There are times late in the game where you need to make the extra pass to hit the open man." Rookie Carlos Boozer had 14 points and 11 rebounds and fellow reserve Darius Miles had 10 and seven for the Cavs, who survived 26 turnovers - 11 by Ilgauskas - with a 49-28 edge on the boards. White and Chris Whitney scored 18 points each, Mark Blount added 15 and Howard 11 for the Nuggets, who shot 45.5 percent (40-of-88) and dropped their seventh straight visit to Cleveland. Denver scored a season-high 35 points in the first quarter but found itself trailing, 61-59, at halftime. The game featured 12 lead changes and 11 ties until a basket by Ilgauskas put Cleveland ahead for good, 76-74, with 5:53 left in the third quarter.
