Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce scored 37 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and the Boston Celtics held the Chicago Bulls to 36 percent shooting. It did not matter. Jalen Rose scored 24 points and Donyell Marshall, Marcus Fizer and Tyson Chandler posted double-doubles as the Bulls used tenacious defense of their own to defeat the Celtics, 94-83, for their fourth victory in five games. "We are still making a hell of a lot of mistakes, but they are not the same mistakes," said Bulls coach Bill Cartwright, whose team overcame 16 missed free throws and 22 turnovers. "Those are livable so long as we continue to grow, to work together and share the ball on the offensive end, and on the defensive end stay focused." "I think the Chicago Bulls are playing really good basketball right now," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "I expect they will have a very fine year from here on out. They have a great combination of players who are playing with a great intensity." Fizer collected career highs of 20 points and 17 rebounds, Marshall had 20 and 13 for his team-leading 10th double-double and Chandler 14 and 10 as the Bulls completed a split of their four-game season series with the Celtics. "Every day I come in and work harder to get back on the court," said Fizer. "The reward is high, and so is the level of play. Being able to come out and stay focused the whole game is what I need to do." "Marcus Fizer has always given us fits," O'Brien said. "He has a real tenacity and aggressiveness around the basket." Pierce made only 10-of-27 shots and Antoine Walker 6-of-18 for Boston, which shot just 33 percent (29-of-87), including 5-of-24 from the arc. "(The) opportunities are there," Pierce said. "We just have to figure out what are the good shots and what are the bad shots. I can't get worried about missing shots. This team needs my shots. I just have to keep playing." "We didn't lose this game because of our defense," O'Brien said. "We played well at that end. We got 22 turnovers out there. The biggest problem tonight was that we just didn't hit our shots." Chicago took the lead for good, 24-23, on a jumper by Fizer that capped the scoring in the first quarter. The Bulls extended their advantage to 48-37 at the half and led by as many as 16 points in the third quarter. "I thought that for the last week fo games we have been really focused when we came out, and it really continued tonight," Cartwright said. "Anytime we are in the lead we play a pretty good game. We were locked in to what they were running." After Eddy Curry made 1-of-2 free throws to open the fourth quarter and give Chicago a 68-56 advantage, the Celtics scored the next 11 points, including the final nine by Walker, to get within 68-67 with 7:36 to play. But Rose countered with a jumper, and the Bulls pulled away in the final minutes on 3-pointers by Marshall and rookie Jay Williams and inside buckets by Fizer. Walker had 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists before fouling out with 2:18 to play for the Celtics, who held the Bulls to 28-of-78 from the field. "You can't take anything for granted against the Chicago Bulls," Pierce said. "They're a very talented team. You don't know who's going to step up on that team on any given night. We just didn't take away their strengths." "This is a bad team and we didn't come ready to play against a bad team," Walker said. "This is a disappointing loss."
