Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Just as Wesley Person was finding his stroke, the Golden State Warriors were losing theirs. Person shook off an awful start to score 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, and the Memphis Grizzlies held the Warriors without a basket for nearly the last seven minutes in a 104-91 victory. Pau Gasol and rookie Gordan Giricek scored 18 points each for the Grizzlies, who have won five of their last six games and showed how far they have come with Hubie Brown as coach. Exactly five weeks ago, the Grizzlies showed no spark in a 108-101 home loss to Golden State that dropped them to 0-8 and turned out to be Sidney Lowe's last game as coach. Brown took over the following day and, after losing his first five games, has the Grizzlies sharing the ball, defending and playing much more competitive basketball. "They are better coached, they are more disciplined," Warriors guard Gilbert Arenas said. "When they are disciplined, they believe in the system that is working out." A three-point play by Chris Mills gave the Warriors an 89-88 lead with 6:57 to play. But Golden State did not score again from the field as Memphis went to a zone. "Our zone defense has been good in the fourth quarter during this winning streak," Person said. "When the fourth quarter comes, teams are worn down and the shots stop falling from outside." Person, who missed his first eight shots, hit a long jumper and a 3-pointer to open a 93-89 lead with 4:29 remaining. That ended a stretch in which the sharpshooter scored 11 of Memphis' 13 points. "I thought I was pressing a little too much in the first half," Person said. "I was pressing, trying to get off to a good start and I was just rushing it. I thought in the fourth quarter I relaxed and let the game come to me." Arenas made two free throws to halve the deficit, but Gasol answered with two and Lorenzen Wright added another for a 96-91 lead at the 1:49 mark. Shane Battier, who had not scored from the field, drilled a 3-pointer that sealed it at 99-91 with 1:32 to go. "The defense just collapsed and I was wide open," Battier said. "It happened so fast, you really don't have to think about it, especially in a situation like that." Lorenzen Wright had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Jason Williams handed out 13 assists for Memphis, which has matched the best six-game stretch in franchise history. It is 7-6 in its last 13 games. Antawn Jamison scored 19 points for Golden State, which did not score in the final 4:18 and lost its third straight game. "When we went to it (zone), they were fatigued," Brown said. "They'd been running hard. Their main guys had all played big minutes. ... So you're hoping that what happens there is that they'll finally hit a cold streak. You've got to then hold them to one shot, and Lorenzen was big. He got all the contact rebounds." Rookie Drew Gooden scored all 13 of his points in the first half, helping Memphis to a 55-48 lead. But Jamison scored eight points in a 12-2 run that opened the second half and gave Golden State a 62-60 lead. Person's hot streak began with a 3-pointer that gave the Grizzlies an 83-79 lead with 9:45 to play. He had another 3-pointer to keep the advantage at 88-84, but Arenas hit two free throws before Mills' three-point play. "You definitely have to commend Memphis for playing together and playing hard," Jamison said. "They made it tough for us to get it in the post. Those were some of the things we were doing a week and a half ago." Stromile Swift had 12 points and eight boards for the Grizzlies, who shot 45 percent (38-of-84) and held a 55-47 advantage on the glass. Arenas had 17 points and seven assists and Troy Murphy added 12 and 14 rebounds for the Warriors, who shot under 39 percent (35-of-90). They were just 5-of-23 in the final period.
