Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jalen Rose scored 20 points and the Chicago Bulls allowed just 12 points in the fourth quarter as they snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Toronto Raptors with a 96-83 victory. Donyell Marshall collected 17 points and 11 rebounds and Marcus Fizer added 15 and 13 as the Bulls completed a 5-1 homestand with their season-high third straight win. "I was very happy with our guys, the way they competed," Chicago coach Bill Cartwright said. "In the newspaper today, we were expected to win. That kind of scared me a little bit, because I don't them want them to relax. We should feel a lot of anxiety to perform and get better. We have so much room to grow." "We have to keep playing hard," Marshall added. "We have to keep playing hard. We took two steps forward, we can't take one back now." Chicago led, 73-71, late in the third period when Fizer made a layup to ignite a 9-0 run he capped with a layup 1:53 into the final quarter. The Raptors got as close as eight points, but an 11-4 run by the Bulls iced the victory. Morris Peterson scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half while Jelani McCoy and Jerome Williams each added 16 and 11 rebounds for Toronto, which last lost to Chicago on February 28, 1999. The Bulls led by as many as nine in the first quarter and 11 in the second, but each time the Raptors were able to close the gap. They pulled within 56-49 at halftime when Voshon Lenard sank a 3-pointer with 27 seconds left and a free throw 10 seconds later. Toronto followed the same formula in the third, falling behind 64-53 after rookie Jay Williams' driving lay-in with 8:29 to go. But Jerome Williams scored six points in a 10-0 burst that brought the Raptors within a point. "We kept trying and trying, but there was some mental fatigue, which led to missed assignments," Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens said. "Give Chicago credit. They played well. We hung in there, but to their credit, they played well." Chicago rebuilt a six-point advantage on a bucket by Rose and Marshall's three-point play. Jay Williams had 14 points and seven assists and Tyson Chandler added 10 points for the Bulls, who shot 49 percent (42-of-86) from the floor. Lindsey Hunter scored 14 points off the bench and Lenard had 13 as Toronto shot 38 percent (32-of-85) and lost for the fifth time in six games. After Toronto narrowed the margin to 83-75 on McCoy's lay-in with 6:08 left, Eddy Curry sank a layup to ignite a 9-2 run that culminated with Williams' 3-pointer with 3:53 remaining. "They're playing much better as a team than earlier this year," Hunter said. "I think it takes time for new guys to fit in and for the young guys to learn their roles."
