Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Shawn Marion's newfound comfort with 3-pointers is starting to help the Phoenix Suns. Marion buried three 3-pointers during a key first-half run and finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Suns rolled to an 87-76 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Marion is known mainly as a mid-range scorer and rebounder but is becoming increasingly proficient from long range. After going just 25-of-104 from 3-point range in his first two seasons, he made 48-of-122 in 2001-02 and is launching even more shots from behind the arc this season. "I started last year shooting the threes," he said. "I don't even think about that. I shoot the open shots that I get. I shoot a lot in practice, before practice and before a game. I've always had the confidence." "He goes through stretches," Phoenix coach Frank Johnson said. "Early in the season he wasn't making them. Now he's hitting his shot, which is opening other parts of his game." The 24-year-old forward has buried 32-of-102 3-pointers through 26 games after going 4-for-6 on Friday. He ended the first quarter with his first 3-pointer to give the Suns the lead for good and spark a 15-0 run. Phoenix had a 23-21 lead entering the second period. Bo Outlaw made a hook shot before Marion nailed his second shot from the arc 55 seconds into the quarter. After baskets by rookie Casey Jacobsen and Jake Tsakalidis, Marion buried another 23-footer to give the Suns a 35-21 cushion at the 7:55 mark. Marion capped the second quarter with a 15-foot jumper to give Phoenix its largest lead of the first half at 48-33. Stephon Marbury scored eight of his 16 points in the third quarter for the Suns, who led by double digits the entire second half. Rookie Amare Stoudemire had 18 points and 11 rebounds as the Suns won for the fifth time in six games. He had four dunks, including a stunning jam over Los Angeles center Michael Olowokandi midway through the third quarter. "I try to keep playing hard," the 20-year-old forward said. "I don't look at stats. I know my role: helping with rebounds, be active on defense. That will help make us a pretty good team." Stoudemire and Marion dominated inside for Phoenix, which outscored Los Angeles in the paint, 50-28. Rookie Marko Jaric had 18 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for the Clippers, who have lost four of six following a three-game winning streak. Wang Zhizhi scored a season-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting off the bench. Los Angeles shot just 36 percent (29-of-81) from the floor despite making 10-of-23 3-pointers. "I really want to be a contributor to this team, but up until now I haven't had much of an opportunity," Zhizhi said. "If we had won the game I would have said this was my best." "The bright spot obviously was Dodger (Zhizhi)," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "He did a real good job. The minutes that he played, he made shots." Los Angeles played without forward Elton Brand and guard Eric Piatkowski, who are sidelined with injuries. "We've got to get some kind of situation where we get the same guys out there night in and night out," Gentry said. "We haven't had that."
