Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones' resurgence is translating into wins for the Miami Heat. Jones scored 10 of his 17 points in the decisive second quarter and rookie Caron Butler added a season-high 25 as the Heat rolled to their most lopsided victory of the season, a 97-77 triumph over the struggling Toronto Raptors. Jones struggled for much of the season's first six weeks, scoring more than 20 points just five times in Miami's first 20 games. But he has erupted of late, averaging 27.5 points in his last six contests. The veteran guard had scored at least 20 points in five straight games, but the streak ended on Friday as he sat out the fourth quarter. His recent success has boosted the Heat, who have won three of their last four games after opening the season 5-17. "We're finding out who we are as a team," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "They have to start proving it as a team. We're playing efficient and moving the ball. We're trying to develop." "We hope this is the beginning of a turnaround," Butler said. "If we continue to play hard, anything can happen." Jones made 6-of-7 shots from the floor, including both his 3-pointers, as Miami shot a blistering 56 percent (36-of-64). The Heat made 22-of-27 free throws and held a 27-8 advantage in fast-break points. Travis Best scored 12 points and Brian Grant had 11 points and nine rebounds to help the Heat to a 42-29 advantage on the glass. Miami took the lead for good on a fast-break layup by Butler less than five minutes into the second quarter. The Heat had a 41-35 lead before scoring 12 of the final 14 points in the first half. Jones scored eight points during the burst, including the first four. He capped the second quarter with a fadeaway jumper and layup to give Miami a 53-37 halftime cushion. "I was going to make sure that I got control of this game, no matter what," Jones said. "I started being offensive-minded. I started looking for my offense before looking to somebody else." The Heat outscored the Raptors in the second quarter, 30-12. Toronto made just 2-of-12 shots in the period, missing 10 consecutive shots. "We started to break down defensively, then our execution disappeared," Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens said. "I have not seen us play that poorly all year long. This game was the worst game we have played, it was just awful." Butler scored eight points in the third quarter and nine in the fourth. Miami led by as many as 27 points on three occasions in the fourth quarter and improved to 2-0 on a four-game road trip. Toronto never got closer than 13 points in the second half and lost for the seventh time in eight games. The Raptors have won just eight of their first 26 games for their worst start under Wilkens. Voshon Lenard scored 19 points and Alvin Williams added 17 for Toronto, which shot just 37 percent (26-of-71). "We had a rough start, a rough middle and a rough end," Toronto forward Michael Bradley said. "It is real tough to come back against a good defensive team like that when you're down by 15 points." Williams scored 15 points in the first half but did not attempt a shot after halftime, making only two free throws in the final 24 minutes.
