Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Robert Traylor just needed to get a little closer. Traylor atoned for two missed free throws with a tip-in at the buzzer - his only basket of the game - to give the New Orleans Hornets an 88-86 overtime victory over the Seattle SuperSonics. Traylor came on after center Elden Campbell fouled out. With the score tied, 86-86, he was fouled with 40 seconds left but missed both free throws. On the next possession, Seattle All-Star guard Gary Payton missed a jumper, falling to 6-of-24 from the field. New Orleans elected not to call timeout and put the ball in the hands of Baron Davis, its All-Star guard. Davis launched a 3-pointer that hit the front of the rim and bounded off the backboard before Traylor's tip swished through as the horn sounded. "After missing those free throws, it was tough," said Traylor, who was averaging just 2.6 points per game. "But I just wanted to get into position and get the ball back into the air and it so happened it just went in. For me, that's a great confidence-booster. That's the first time that's happened in an NBA game." "I couldn't believe it," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "I was so elated. I was elated for him because he had gone up with two free throws to hopefully win it and he didn't make them. But on the last play, he became the hero, so from goat to hero." The Hornets snapped a season-high three-game losing streak and improved to 4-1 in overtime games. It was their second buzzer-beating win of the year, having also edged Philadelphia at the horn on November 19. Jamal Mashburn had 30 points and 10 rebounds and Davis scored 20 points for New Orleans, which moved to 3-3 on its season-high seven-game road trip that ends in San Antonio. "It was very important," Davis said. "You can see how happy we are. We couldn't really pull out victories like we were supposed to but tonight we go to lucky. I know if we would've gone to another overtime, we would've lost, because I was tired." Rashard Lewis had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Payton scored 15 points for Seattle, which blew an early 14-point lead and fell to 5-6 at home. The SuperSonics also have had their fair share of last-second wins this year but were on the short end of this one. "We don't box out," Payton said. "They get a tip-in and they beat us on a crazy play. They miss the shot, we've got to get the rebound." After a basket by Predrag Drobnjak opened overtime, Mashburn had a basket and 3-pointer for an 86-83 lead with 2:56 to go. But the Hornets did not score again until Traylor's basket. Lewis tied it with a 3-pointer with 59 seconds left. "We are just not able to make the plays late in the ballgame," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "Whether it's coming up with a defensive stop, rebounding the ball or have the opportunity to go ahead with the ball. Right now, we're not making those plays." Two free throws by Davis - New Orleans' first two of the second half - provided a 72-70 lead with 3:14 left in the fourth quarter. A 3-pointer by Brent Barry gave Seattle a 79-77 lead, but Mashburn drove for the tying hoop with a minute to go. Drobnjak made a spot-up jumper at the 45-second mark, but Campbell answered with a short baseline jumper that bounced around an in 19 seconds later, sending it to overtime at 81-81. P.J. Brown swept 13 boards for the Hornets, who shot 44 percent (38-of-87) and held a 47-42 edge on the glass. New Orleans matched a franchise low with just six free throws, making three. Drobnjak and Desmond Mason scored 12 points each and Barry added 10 for the Sonics, who shot 37 percent (33-of-89) and made 16-of-17 free throws. Lewis scored eight points as Seattle raced to a 31-17 lead after one quarter. But New Orleans closed to 46-43 at halftime and took a 60-58 edge after three periods.
