Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Even though Allen Iverson called it "the worst game I've ever played," the Atlanta Hawks were fortunate to hold off the Philadelphia 76ers. Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 28 points and Ira Newble added 15 in place of the injured Glenn Robinson as the Hawks snapped a five-game losing streak with a 79-77 triumph over the 76ers. Iverson scored just 13 points - his second-lowest total of the season - on 6-of-28 shooting as Philadelphia lost for the second time in 12 meetings with Atlanta. "It was the worst game I've ever played," Iverson said. "I feel like the only person that could stop me is me. I had open looks and I missed layups." On December 7 at Houston, Iverson recorded 11 points on 5-of-19 shooting. Ranked second in the NBA in scoring, Iverson totaled just two points in the second half. The 2000-01 NBA MVP hit a 20-foot jumper with 6:52 to go in the third that forged a 48-48 tie. "He couldn't get to the free-throw line," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "When you have him shooting poorly, and Keith (Van Horn) wasn't shooting well, that's your two best offensive scorers having a bad night. You have to find ways to get to the free-throw line." "You're just trying to contest his shot and not foul him when he drives to the lane," Hawks guard Jason Terry said of Iverson. Abdur-Rahim nailed a jumper with 71 seconds left to give the Hawks a 76-68 advantage. But Van Horn made two baskets in the next eight seconds and Eric Snow sank a pair of free throws with 40 seconds to go as the Sixers got within 76-74. Terry converted a crucial driving layup 15 seconds later to restore Atlanta's four-point cushion. "It hurts, but we fought hard," Sixers forward Kenny Thomas said. "Jason Terry came down the middle and laid it up. That right there was a knife in the chest." Philadelphia still was trailing by two when Snow missed a layup and Van Horn was off with a fallaway jumper as time expired. "We had chances, we had two shots to tie," Snow said. "We had the opportunity at the end, but you can't let it come to that. We played uphill, and that's tough." Iverson usually gets the ball when Philadelphia needs a clutch shot. But he was along the right side of the arc as the Sixers looked for the tying basket. "I felt like we got two good shots, that's all you can ask for," Iverson said. "I have confidence in my teammates, that's what teams are all about. I'm not mad at all, that's the way it went." Van Horn paced the Sixers with 18 points and Snow scored 11 of his 17 in the fourth quarter. The Hawks' leading scorer with 21.4 points per game, Robinson was sidelined with contusions to his right lower back and right wrist. Abdur-Rahim, however, established Atlanta's early dominance, netting 12 points in the opening 10 minutes. The 6-9 forward scored eight straight points for the Hawks, who opened a 25-14 lead with 2:08 to go in the first quarter. "They played last night also," Brown said. "They had a bad injury tonight, they're coming off a difficult loss, they didn't have Glenn Robinson. We gave a great opportunity away. You take bad shots - what did we have, 14 assists? That's all we talked about in the locker room, taking bad shots and not moving the ball." Atlanta guard Emanual Davis suffered a torn right Achilles tendon with 4:29 left in the first half and is expected to be sidelined up to eight months.
