Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Lucious Harris has gone from solid reserve to major threat for the New Jersey Nets in less than six months. Harris scored 20 points and Richard Jefferson added 18 and 10 rebounds as the Nets extended their home winning streak to 10 games with a 99-83 victory over the Chicago Bulls. New Jersey used Harris as its sixth man last season but inserted him in the starting lineup after Kerry Kittles was injured on December 3. He had not made a start since the 2000-01 season but has flourished in the role, averaging better than 15 points per game in December. The 10-year veteran has scored in double figures in nine straight games while developing into a lethal shooter. He owns the sixth-best 3-point percentage in the league at 45 percent, well over his career average of 35 percent. Harris had nine points and five rebounds in the third quarter, when the Nets outscored the Bulls, 31-13. "We tried to pick up the pace of the game, but Chicago kept the game close in the first half," Harris said. "In the second half, we were able to speed up the game and get a few easy baskets. I was fortunate enough to stay in a rhythm and I shot the ball very well. I just hope it continues." New Jersey made 11-of-20 shots in the period while holding the Chicago to 23 percent (5-of-22). "We came out on fire in the first quarter. Our energy was high and our focus was excellent," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "By the start of the third quarter, our focus was out the window. We just weren't able to come out with the same urgency and it was an uphill battle from there. You have to credit the Nets, they came out and made shots in the third quarter." Kenyon Martin scored the first four points of the second half to spark a 14-2 run for the Nets. Harris buried a 3-pointer during the spurt and Jason Kidd capped it with a three-point play for a 64-46 cushion at the 7:40 mark. "In the third quarter, our guys came out and did a great job," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "We did not have the same type of energy in the first half that we displayed in the third quarter. (In the first half), it was not the type of effort we were accustomed to seeing." "In the first half, we played very flat," Jefferson added. "We were able to adjust in the second half and pull away like we have all season." Harris had another 3-pointer midway through the quarter and completed a three-point play with 42 seconds left. Jefferson ended the period with a reverse dunk for an 81-57 cushion. The Nets never were threatened in the final 12 minutes and had their largest lead at 83-57 on a dunk by Martin 29 seconds into the fourth quarter. New Jersey extended the second-longest home winning streak in franchise history and improved to 15-1 at Continental Airlines Arena. Kidd finished with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Martin had 12 points and eight rebounds as the Nets won for the eighth time in their last 10 games overall. Jalen Rose and reserve Marcus Fizer each scored 16 points for the Bulls, who shot just 40 percent (30-of-75) and lost for just the third time in nine games. Rookie Jay Williams - who had his first career triple-double on November 9 against New Jersey - was held to eight points, four assists and one rebound. The Bulls have lost 14 consecutive road games since opening the season with a win in Boston. "We were trying to get that win on the road," Williams said. "It would've been big for us. Until we break that barrier, we're not going to be the team we know we can be." Harris scored nine points in the first quarter as the teams played to a 23-23 tie. Rodney Rogers buried a 3-pointer 62 seconds into the second to give the Nets the lead for good. Jefferson scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the quarter as New Jersey took a 50-44 halftime lead.
