Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki and the red-hot Dallas Mavericks simply overwhelmed the New York Knicks. Nowitzki collected 19 points, nine rebounds and seven assists and Steve Nash also scored 19 points as the Mavericks opened a season-high six-game homestand with a 107-82 rout of the Knicks. Nowitzki had 15 points, four boards and four assists in the first half and helped Dallas cruise to its sixth victory in seven games. The Mavericks own the NBA's best record at 25-4. Four other Mavericks reached double figures as Dallas shot better than 54 percent (45-of-83) en route to its 14th win in 15 games at the American Airlines Center. "We want to win at home," said Mavericks guard Michael Finley, who contributed 14 points. "You want to establish a constant at home and, when you do, that other teams read about it and they know you're playing well at home and that might affect them mentally." "I was able to not overplay the big three," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said, referring to Nowitzki, Nash and Finley. "I was pretty happy about that." Latrell Sprewell scored 16 points and Allan Houston contributed 15 for the Knicks, who shot 35 percent from the floor (31-for-88) and could not build on Friday's win in Houston. They have lost four of the last five meetings with the Mavericks. The Knicks also fell to 0-5 in the second half of back-to-back games. "I'm very concerned about us being able or not being able to play on back-to-back nights," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "It doesn't matter who the opponent is. I have respect for this team, but the way we played last night, there is no way we should go just the opposite." In Houston, Knicks center Michael Doleac contributed a season-high 15 points off the bench and helped Kurt Thomas contain rookie sensation Yao Ming. Despite winning three of their previous four games, the Mavericks had scored 83 points or fewer in three of those contests. But a visit from the Knicks, who have dropped seven of their last 11, sparked the NBA's top scoring team. "Well, I think we really started with a lack of energy lately," Nash said. "So we really wanted to be aggressive and, tonight, we scored in a variety of ways early and it got us going. And we were back to our normal selves." Shandon Anderson came off the bench and scored eight straight points for the Knicks early in the second quarter. He converted a three-point play with 10:16 left in the half to pull New York with 31-28. "I think they create mismatches, they keep the floor open, spread you out," said Anderson, who finished with 12 points. "When you have guys out there who can knock down shots, you can't really help off anybody, and that opens up the floor for layups." Nash hit a jumper to ignite Dallas, which closed the half with a 24-14 stretch. Finley made a pair from the line after time expired, enabling the Mavs to take a 55-42 lead into the locker room. Dallas pulled away in the second half. Raef LaFrentz, who scored 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting off the bench, hit a jumper with 8:17 left in the fourth quarter to give the Mavericks their largest lead, 93-65. "(The bench play) was great. We need that a lot more, a lot more consistency from our bench," said Dallas reserve guard Nick Van Exel, who also had 15 points. "Tonight was a lot better bench play, and we need that throughout the rest of the season." The Mavericks' reserves outscored the Knicks' bench, 38-31. Making his first start of the season, Dallas forward Raja Bell contributed 13 points, five boards and four steals in 32 minutes.
