Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Antawn Jamison scored 28 points as the Golden State Warriors nearly blew a 19-point lead before holding on for a 99-92 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. One night after he had a season-low seven points, Jamison scored 14 by halftime as the Warriors took a 50-41 lead. He drilled a 3-pointer with 6:29 left in the third quarter that extended the advantage to 66-49. But the Clippers began to chip away, closing the period with a 18-8 run. Most of Los Angeles' points during the spurt came in the paint as the Clippers made four straight layups before a late flurry from outside. Andre Miller and Corey Maggette sparked the third quarter with 11 points apiece as the Clippers shot 59 percent (10-of-17). Maggette's long 3-pointer off a feed from Miller got Los Angeles' deficit below double digits at 75-67. For the second straight night, the Warriors had to hold on in the fourth quarter. Golden State saw its lead dwindle to 88-86 with 2:04 remaining following Miller's highlight-reel bank shot around Gilbert Arenas. "You really have to exert a lot of energy in order to try and come back," Jamison said. "I think we got into a comfort zone where we just got very relaxed. We got out to a good lead and instead of being aggressive and going to the basket, we got very relaxed. "We're still a young team and we don't know how to withstand these big leads. We were in over our heads throughout the fourth quarter." Troy Murphy opened the final period with a jumper, but the Clippers countered with an 8-2 spurt and got within 82-80 with 7:47 to play following a fast-break dunk by Lamar Odom. Jamison, who spent most of the night guarding Odom, answered with a hook shot before the teams traded baskets on the next possession. The Warriors had a chance to build their lead to 90-82, but Jamison's shot was blocked by Michael Olowokandi with 3:46 left and Odom and Miller sank consecutive baskets to slice to deficit to 88-86 with 2:04 remaining. The Clippers' best chance to tie came when Jamison fouled out with 69 seconds remaining. But Maggette missed the first of two free throws and Golden State maintained a 90-89 edge. Arenas, who scored 23 points, sank two free throws and Jason Richardson, who chipped in 20, converted a driving layup after Maggette's 3-point attempt was blocked by Adonal Foyle. "You have to give them credit for getting the key shots," Olowokandi said. "Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison definitely helped them out a lot. They played well and there is no definite doubt about that." The Clippers' rally was undone by poor free-throw shooting. While they were 31-of-41 from the line for the night, they missed 7-of-11 attempts in the final 12 minutes. Miller paced Los Angeles with 23 points and Odom added 21 in his season debut. Activated from the injured list after missing 71 games with wrist and ankle injuries, Odom played 37 minutes and grabbed eight rebounds. "It's great to be out there," Odom said. "When you're out for two weeks, three weeks, a month, you still feel like you're part of the team. But being out for 11 months, there's definitely times when I've said, `Man I'm tired of watching." Golden State overcame 42 percent (36-of-86) shooting by outrebounding the Clippers, 49-37. "One of the strengths of our ballclub is rebounding," Warriors coach Eric Musselman said. "We stress it every day and again tonight I think we did a really good job of rebounding out of the zone." Los Angeles shot just 39 percent (29-of-75) and leading scorer Elton Brand was held to a season-low two points.
