Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Yao Ming may be the highest profile first-year player, but Amare Stoudemire quietly is making his case for Rookie of the Year honors. Stoudemire scored 19 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked three shots as the Phoenix Suns won their season-high fifth straight game, a 103-84 triumph over the Cleveland Cavaliers. "If he plays hard ... it'll make up for his inexperience, because he is so gifted," Suns coach Frank Johnson said. "And that is what we preach to him day in and day out: Just play hard, Amare. You play hard, all of the other things will take care of themselves." Penny Hardaway scored 10 of his 16 points in the first quarter and Stoudemire added eight points as the Suns opened a 38-25 advantage. The Suns shot 73 percent in the period (16-of-22). Stoudemire had seven more points in the second quarter as the Suns extended their lead to 58-44 at the break. The Cavs got no closer than nine points over the final 24 minutes. "He was very, very good," Cavs coach John Lucas said. "He was quicker than we were to the ball. He was dominant at times out there." Rookie Casey Jacobsen registered 14 points and Stephon Marbury added 12 and eight assists for the Suns, who won for the ninth time in 10 games. Phoenix won without Shawn Marion, who sprained his left ankle against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday. "I was being aggressive," Stoudemire said. "It felt good. It was a good game and I think everybody stepped up due to (the) absence of Shawn Marion. Everybody stepped up and played well." Phoenix has won five straight contests for the first time since November 26-December 3, 2001. Ricky Davis scored 15 points to lead five Cavaliers in double figures, but guarded by Marbury, he managed just seven points over the final three quarters. "They really took us out of the stuff we wanted to do offensively," Lucas said. "They double-teamed us and took the ball out of Ricky's hands and made us go to our third and fourth options offensively." "Steph did a helluva of a job (on Davis)," Johnson said. "I really didn't want to wear him down. I think I'm going to start putting Steph on all of the top scorers because every time I put him on a scorer, he's awesome. He's able to play that guy then go to the other end and control the tempo offensively and play just so much under control. It's a delight to watch." The Suns were outrebounded, 48-35, but shot 45 percent (38-of-84) and limited the Cavs to 38 percent (30-of-79). "It's tough when you are going out there and giving your best effort on the defensive end, and they are still coming up with the loose balls," said Cavs forward Jumaine Jones, who added 12 points off the bench. Cleveland, which owns the NBA's worst record at 6-26, has lost 16 games this season by at least 10 points. "When you jump on a team that's not used to winning, it gets them down," Hardaway said. "It hurts their confidence. Any run that they make is not going to be good enough."
