Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones continued his strong play with 
23 points as the Miami Heat defeated the Atlanta Hawks, 93-84,
for their fifth victory in six games.

Jones is averaging 25 points in his last 10 games, while the
Heat have relied on stifling defense during their solid stretch.

After holding Boston to just 28 percent from the field in
Friday's 90-70 victory, Miami allowed Atlanta to shoot just 38
percent (28-of-73). It marked the fifth time in the last six
games the Heat held their opponent under 40 percent.

Despite its recent strong play, Miami is still just 11-19 and in
last place in the Atlantic Division.

"We got to play," Jones said. "Forget about patting each other
on the back.  It's about going out and playing as hard as
possible and giving us a chance to win these games. We dug a
hole for ourselves. We need to continue to play good
basketball."

"I think we are getting stronger and staying stronger," Miami
coach Pat Riley added. "This is the first time in a long time we
had all our perimeter guys having great games together."

Jones scored 12 points in the third quarter, helping Miami
stretch a seven-point halftime lead to 71-58 entering the final
period.

The Heat took their biggest lead, 80-62, on a jumper by Mike
James with 8:13 left. Atlanta got no closer than 91-81 on
Shareer Abdur-Rahim's three-point play with 2:05 to go.

"It got to the point where we knew they were going to play
zone," Jones said. "They played a lot of zone against Washington
the other night. Our job was to come off screens, try to get in
the lane and find guys."

Rookie Caron Butler scored 21 points and Travis Best added 20
for Miami.  Best also made a career-high four 3-pointers.

"I was hesitating at first," Best said. "LaPhonso (Ellis) and a
couple other guys told me to shoot it when I get it. I had space
to put it up."

Rookie Mike Wilks scored 19 for the Hawks, who have dropped
eight of 10 and fell to 1-2 under interim coach Terry Stotts.
Wilks was playing in only his third game since signing with
Atlanta.

"We are searching a little bit," Stotts said. "We added Mike
Wilks and the kid is playing well. He is averaging 33 minutes.
When you add a player like that, it kind of changes the rotation
and there are some adjustments to make."

Abdur-Rahim and Glenn Robinson scored 16 points apiece for
Atlanta, which never led after the midpoint of the first
quarter.

The Heat scored the final 10 points of the first period to open
a 23-15 lead, holding the Hawks scoreless over the final 4:23.
Atlanta took its final lead at 15-13 on Abdur-Rahim's 3-pointer.

"We need to compete harder on both ends for better post
positions," Stotts said. "I'm happy that even though the shots
haven't been falling, we are still giving effort defensively."

The Hawks tied the contest at 34-34 on Theo Ratliff's free throw
with 4:52 left in the first half. The Heat responded with a
10-2 spurt, taking a 44-36 lead on Best's 3-pointer with 1:51
left. Miami settled a 48-41 advantage at intermission.

"We feel pretty comfortable against zones," Best said. "We've
been moving the ball and guys have been knocking down open
shots. We've been attacking gaps."

Miami opened its first double-figure lead at 62-51 on Butler's
jumper with 5:42 remaining in the third quarter. James' layup
capped a 7-0 run that made it 80-62 early in the fourth.

"We turned the ball over at critical times," Atlanta guard Jason
Terry said. "We let them keep the momentum. We tried to fight
back, but they kept us at bay."
