Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- As long as the Chicago Bulls had Jalen Rose and Tyson Chandler, they had enough to handle the red-hot Portland Trail Blazers. Rose scored 32 points and Chandler added career highs of 27 and 18 rebounds as the shorthanded Bulls ended the Trail Blazers' season-high eight-game winning streak with a 102-87 victory. Chicago defeated Portland for the first time in eight meetings since January 29, 1998, when current Blazer Scottie Pippen was teaming with Michael Jordan to lead the Bulls to their sixth NBA title in eight years. Facing the deep and talented Blazers, the Bulls were without reserve guard Jamal Crawford (ankle), lost forward Donyell Marshall to a rib injury midway through the third quarter and rookie guard Jay Williams to fouls with just under four minutes to go. It hardly mattered. "When we come out of the gates aggressive with our ears down and ready to go, we play a pretty good basketball game," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. Chandler had the best game of his brief career. Matched up against Rasheed Wallace, the 7-footer collected 20 points and 10 rebounds in a huge first half, helping Chicago to a 57-46 lead. "I was eager to go out and play, and playing well makes me want to play better," Chandler said. "He works real hard in practice and it shows," Rose said. "The sky is the limit for that kid." After a slow start, Rose scored 22 points in the second half, when the Bulls built the lead to 18 points before holding off a rally by the Blazers to snap a three-game losing streak. Pippen scored 15 points for Portland, which was playing its fourth game in five nights. It also had a five-game road winning streak snapped. "Sometimes it catches up to you," Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "You don't use it as an excuse because it's something everyone in the league has to do." The freshest legs belonged to Chandler, whose energy got the Bulls off to a quick start. He scored 13 points in the first quarter as Chicago opened a 34-23 lead. "We were aggressive. We got after it," Cartwright said. "When guys came to the basket, we got to them early. Offensively, we went inside early. Tyson got us off to a good start." "(The) coaches expressed getting good starts and coming out with energy," Chandler added. "I was feeling pretty good out there and wanted to show some energy." A 3-pointer by Fred Hoiberg gave the Bulls a 40-24 bulge with 9:40 left in the second quarter. The Blazers rattled off eight straight points and eventually closed to 50-46, but a jumper by Rose and a flying two-handed dunk by Chandler capped a 7-0 spurt that stopped the surge. Williams made a steal and threw a behind-the-back pass to Rose for a layup, and Rose added a 3-pointer to give Chicago its largest lead at 70-52 with 7:17 left in the third quarter. With Marshall getting X-rays, Portland battled back within 77-72 entering the final period but got no closer. Two free throws by Rose made it 90-80, and Chandler beat the shot clock with a short jumper less than a minute later for a 92-81 advantage. "I think we gathered ourselves and went back at them," Cartwright said. "We knew that they were going to post us and our guys held firm. We did not give up anything at the basket." After Williams fouled out, Rose drilled a 3-pointer for a 97-83 lead with 3:15 to go. Marshall scored 12 points, Marcus Fizer added 10 and Williams nine and nine assists for the Bulls, who shot 44 percent (35-of-80) from the field and held a 48-35 edge on the boards. Chandler had nine offensive rebounds. Wallace and Bonzi Wells scored 14 points each for the Blazers, who shot 42 percent (31-of-74) and never led. "We just didn't have it tonight," Pippen said. "They came out with a lot of energy. They're very young and they're a team that can really get up and push the ball."
