Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Antoine Walker is over his stomach illness, and the Boston Celtics put an end to their three-game losing streak. Walker matched a season high with 33 points and added 11 rebounds to lead the Celtics to a 96-89 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. Walker had been bothered by the flu and scored just nine points in Boston's 101-95 loss at Orlando on Saturday. But he showed no ill effects Tuesday, using his quickness to drive around forwards Pau Gasol and Shane Battier most of the game. "With a three-game losing streak, I can't afford to sit out," Walker said. "I was very dehydrated. I didn't eat for two days. I was just trying to get healthy. But I felt very good once I got going, heated up and into the flow of the game." The two-time All-Star scored 15 points in the third quarter, helping the Celtics build an 82-71 lead. He had two layups, a free throw and two 3-pointers in the final 5:21 of the period, highlighting a 23-7 run. Boston held its biggest lead at 96-81 on a 3-pointer by Walter McCarty with 4:26 left. The Celtics did not score the rest of the way, but held Memphis to two baskets and four free throws. McCarty provided a major lift off the bench for Boston, taking advantage of his increased playing time with a season-high 16 points and eight rebounds. McCarty played 34 minutes - 12 more than his average - as center Tony Battie sat out with a right knee injury. "I do the same thing every game, play hard," McCarty said. "I just had open looks tonight. I was just playing within the game." McCarty hit 6-of-7 shots from the field, including all four 3-pointers. He added a career-high three blocked shots. "I thought Walter McCarty was absolutely outstanding in every phase of the game," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "Putting Walter at (center), we were able to get the type of energy that we need at the defensive end." Gasol scored 18 points and rookie Gordan Giricek had 17 for the Grizzlies, who lost for the 13th time in 14 road games. "We played at a good level, but there were those minutes in the third that was the difference," Gasol said. "We still have some minutes when we are not in the game." Celtics leading scorer Paul Pierce bruised his right knee in the second quarter and sat out the game's final six minutes. He finished with 17 points, nine below his average. "I bruised my kneecap early in the second quarter. It was hampering me most of the game," said Pierce, who was 6-of-17 from the field. "I saw that we had a 13-point cushion so I decided to take it to the bank and get it checked out." Walker, McCarty and Tony Delk combined to hit 11 3-pointers for Boston. Memphis was just 5-of-24 from the arc. Giricek and Gasol combined for 13 points to highlight a 17-8 run that opened the second half. Jason Williams capped the spurt with a layup, giving the Grizzlies a 64-59 lead with 5:30 left in the third quarter. But Walker converted a layup and Delk connected on a 3-pointer to tie the game. After Lorenzen Wright completed a three-point play, the Celtics scored the next 10 points. Walker connected on a 3-pointer to increase the lead to 74-67 with 2:05 remaining and capped the 23-7 spurt in style with a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer. "They (Memphis' forwards) are very long but I was able to force them to play my drive and I was able to get to the basket," Walker said. "When they started playing the drive, I stepped back for the three." "Antoine Walker is a handful and tonight he played a great game," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "We did a decent job on Pierce, but unfortunately the guy who hurt us tonight, really hurt us, was McCarty." After Memphis closed within 84-77 on a dunk by Wright with 8:54 left in the fourth quarter, the Celtics went on a 12-4 run over the next 3 1/2 minutes as McCarty hit a pair of 3-pointers and a short jumper. "We were trying to help out guys on the screens high and they kicked it back and McCarty burned us with the threes," Brown said.
